Disable automatically adding links to media on images
-
Hi,
For a while I have noticed that images in posts and pages on my site include clickable links to the source image at full size, allowing readers to mouse over the images and get the “hand” cursor to click on them.
On looking into this, I have noticed that when adding media files to my site, they seem to add this link to themselves by default (so they can be clicked on to access the media full-size on its own).
I can remove the links manually (if I remember to!) but is there a setting so that, going forward, images and media do not include the links to themselves when uploaded and added to a post or page?
I realise that I will need to manually update media from previous posts which is okay.
Thanks!

Hi there, it really depends on how those images were inserted. Please walk us through your process of adding images to your posts, including which editor you use to create your posts.
If possible, please also link to an existing post where the images are linked as you mentioned.

Hi,
Thanks!
When I add images, I use either the web/desktop app (same thing really) – add new block > Image > Upload. It then adds the image, but this image has a clickable link to the full size original. When I look in the editor, the image has a link in the links area to a “media file”.
You can see this on the banner at the top of my not-quite-finished Newsletter page I am working on: https://richardholliday.co.uk/about/newsletter/ – I have not removed the link at all, this is how it appears by default using the above steps.
(I have gone back and amended all the posts that had this issue, funnily enough only seemed to be there from September-ish; all posts prior to this have images that don’t have the links)
Hope this helps!

Hi rjpholliday,
I haven’t been able to duplicate this. Here is my process:
– type /image on a new line and press enter
– add an image from the media library
– double check its settings. I tapped the link button; there was no link in place but I could choose one
When you add a post again, and add an image through the block, can you click its link icon to see if there’s anything selected by default there? Then unselect it. I’m wondering if the editor thinks you have a preference and is remembering it.

Hi, sorry for the tardy reply!
I don’t use that method to add images; I will click the “plus” icon, select the “image” block and when I either add an image from the library or upload something new, when I click the link icon in the toolbar it has inserted a link to a “media file” by default with an arrow-pointing-from-a-square icon to signify this.

I have never consciously selected this behaviour. I can easily remove this link but preferably I’d rather it didn’t add this; it’s a minor issue but one nonetheless.
Thanks!

Hi there,
I was able to replicate your issue and chase it down to a default setting that you do not have direct access to. I have manually changed the
image_default_link_typesetting on your site from “file” to “none” to resolve this issue. If you add any new images (using the same method you described above) to you now see that the default behavior is to NOT link the image?
Thanks for confirming.

Hi, apologies for the tardy reply.
Can confirm, this now works as expected; I’ll mark this thread as resolved.
Thank you for sorting this out, I am most appreciative!
