Disable blocks?
-
Hi! I just returned to wordpress.com and see there’s this new block thing. I hate it. I just want to be able to write, copy, edit, and bullet text in flowing paragraphs like normal.
It said I can do that by adding a classic block. Since I already know that’s what I always want going forward, is there a way to set the site to just use classic blocks or do I have to remember to add a classic block every time I create a new post? Thanks!

We have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block, though we don’t currently have a way to set that as default yet: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
We also have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/
If you have any feedback on the new editor, we’re always looking for ways to improve it, so please let us know!

“…though we don’t currently have a way to set that as default yet…”
I think this possibility would be interesting for many members of the community (including myself). Is there a project in this direction?

Hi. The WP-Admin editor (which now being referred to as the “Classic Editor”) is still available to all members. It can be accessed as described and illustrated here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/block-vs-classic/page/3/#post-3575873.

Hi there,
We are no longer developing new features for the classic editor, so over time it will miss out on new tools and integrations we are planning for the block editor.
With this in mind we do not plan to have a way to set the classic editor as default, since it will eventually be retired, so the Classic Block is your best option at this point.

staff-totoro, I was not talking about the classic editor as default, but the classic block.

Thank you, all! I definitely want to continue using the classic block since other types of blocks don’t fit the regular style of writing I do and strip functionality from it.
Like the ability to use ctrl+a to quickly highlight my entire post for copying. Other blocks, that shortcut only highlights the contents of the current block. Or the ability to select a portion of sentences and bullet them.
The formatting pop up that sits there over every block is also annoying when I’m trying to write and navigate, so it’s nice with the classic block to just have the formatting at the top as usual.
This new style just adds a lot of extra steps and embellishments I don’t personally need, but I’m sure if I ever need to post something that isn’t just regular writing, it’ll come in handy!
