Disable invisible editing of comments
-
Yeah, I’ve been following the drama ;). And I’ve spent enough years on livejournal to know that you will be getting a lot more of this grief if you continue to give blog admins the power to silently change other people’s words.
I know that sometimes comments need to be edited to fix broken tags or links, so I’m not seeking to get rid of the functionality. But, in the interests of not having the forums packed with flamewar fallout, can we please have an addendum to any edited comment that states it has been edited, by whom and at what time? Responsible admins usually point out their edits anyway. There is no reason why such changes shouldn’t be out in the open and every reason why they should.

Editing’s censorship, yes, but not allowing people to practice censorship on their own blogs is also a form of censorship :) I have no problem with people playing fast and loose with the content of their comments as long as it’s being made clear to their readers exactly what’s going on. We as readers are entitled to know whether this is what the commenter actually said or whether the blog owner has been fiddling with it.
-
I agree with wank.
I have edited a few comments on my own blog, but only to fix links or correct grammar (when asked to by the commenter). I don’t have 12-year olds picking on me, but i think it’s reasonable to have some sort of notification that the comment was edited.
-
I never realized how big of an issue that this could be. Naive Trent going through life not even wondering how many of my comments on the net have been edited or changed without even a sniff that it happened as I don’t keep track on what I commented on…….scary……
-
Of course it’s reasonable but the internet is full of unreasonable and uncontrollable people, isn’t it?
And don’t we have examples of non-compliance with the voluntary “mature” blog label we can look to? In the “mature” blog example it seems those who are not following that rule are benefiting greatly while the reasonable and compliant who are voluntarily labeling are being penalized, aren’t they?
(1) So how would such a “rule” be enforced?
(2) Who would deal with the complaints against the non compliant?
(3) What type of enforcement action would be taken?
(4) Who would the enforcer(s) be?
(5) What form of appeal would there be? -
And how would such a “rule” be enforced?
I don’t think we’re talking about a rule but rather a function, an automatic piece of text that is added to the comment when it is edited, a byline-type thing.
-
-
Oh an automatic text censorship function applied by staff, eh?
On what grounds would such an automatic text censorship function be instituted?
Do you see where I’m going with this?If such an automatic text function can be applied to comment editing then you can bet your life that I will be expecting an automatic text labeling function to be applied to blogs with “mature” content like this: blogs depicting violence, torture and degradation for the purpose of sexual gratification. I call them “obscene” blogs. And yes we do have them here folks as boles and I can certainly attest to.
Any penguin owner of any age can stumble into an “obscene” blog.
Any blogger answering questions on the forum can click on a username and “experience” an “obscene” blog.
Any blogger using the “next blog” button can be hurtled into an “obscene” blog.So if automatic text censorship is going to be advocated then let’s “talk turkey”.
-
Do you see where I’m going with this?
To be honest, no. How is letting people know that a comment has been edited somehow a greater evil than allowing comments to be edited without the readers’ knowledge?
-
The suggestion is to add in a:
[This post has been edited by the site admin at such and such time on such and such date]
to a comment if it’s been edited.
-
What’s evil about “comments being edited without the readers knowledge”?
What do we bloggers consider to be “evil”?If editing comments without stating that we did so is evil, then how is being unsuspectingly hurtled into viewing a blog devoted to “obscene” (see above for definition) depictions not “evil” too?
-
DrMike – That’s my understanding.
TT – I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about anymore. :-(
-
Let’s sweep the real “evil” under the carpet.
Instead let’s agree stick to the issue of automatic text editing of comments, eh?
Yeah, sure. -

wank’s “suggestion” was
Disable invisible editing of comments

“Disable invisible editing of comments” is the application of a technological solution that removes discretion from the blogger. Cool.
If this can be done for one form of “evil” then it can be done to compel labeling on blogs when it comes to the other “evil” like blogs with “obscene” content too. Super cool.
Obscene content defined – the depiction of violence, torture and/or degradation of beings living or dead for the purpose of the sexual titillation and gratification of blog readers.
-
Wank is saying that if the blog’s admin modifies or edits a comment, a notice like the one that I suggest should be added. Currently, there’s no notice which woul dmake the editing invisible.
