disable proofreader

  • Unknown's avatar

I had a look at the support page about proofreading and followed the instruction to change the ‘personal settings’ but I could not see anything about changing the proofreading options.
    Thanks, Wolfgang

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, this support page has information on settings for proofreading.

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/proofreading/

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hm, thanks.
I had a look at that page, as I said before, but when I followed the instruction and went to my personal setting I could not find this list of choices as it is shown in the page you mentioned.

That’s the site I am talking about

    The Renowned Collection

and I use the Yoko theme

I can’t find that option either. Clicking on “Users” “Personal Settings” in wp-admin sends you to https://wordpress.com/me/account in the Calypso dashboard. (I thought there was supposed to be an arrow sticking out of a box if you were being redirected?).

  • Unknown's avatar

yep, as you said, I ended up in account settings and there were no further selections to be made, which could lead to the settings for proofreading.

    The Calypso dashboard?

I am adding the modlook tag to ask staff to return to this issue. Perhaps wp-admin “Personal Settings” shouldn’t be linking to the My Sites/Calypso dashboard. If the wp-admin proofreading adjustment options had been removed for good I would have expected @thesacredpath (as the most senior of staff here) would have known about it.

  • Good morning –

This is not a setting that I routinely use for personal stuff, but I have taken a look and have replicated the same thing.

    From /wp-admin/ – users – personal settings

I get redirected to the new dashboard, where none of those options are available as described in that support doc.

I’m going to dig a little bit and see what I can find out. I’ll report back with more information.

OOPsss! I hope you work something out.

I don’t want to interrupt the flow of things, here… but,

    something else?

Where could I express my disappointment about the (in my opinion unnecessary and to the worse) change of the widget setup page?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi tangowolfgang,

Sure, we’ll let you know what we find. You can share your widget feedback here and we’ll still use this thread to follow up with you about the proofreader.

  • Unknown's avatar

Oh thanks, that makes it easy for me.

I have been with wordpress for almost ten years and I trust there were many changes and improvements in the background, which I didn’t notice, however, those which I have noticed, none of them I found helpful.

The last one is the change in the widget setup page. Previously, one could arrange the widgets by dragging them to the place (sidebar and its position there) where I wanted them and the editing happened through opening the widget at its place. Simple and self-explanatory.

Now, for editing one needs to open another page called the visual editor, which only allows me to see the changes after I close the editing sidebar. cumbersome x 2!

To change the position of a widget requires to open it and change the number of priority. Click and drag was much easier.

My comment: If I would be the BOSS! I would not have promoted such a change. There are other things which would be more practical.

For example? Would here be the place to mention them?

@wolfganko, if you wish to use the drag and drop for widgets, or use the older styled editor and dashboard features, you can still get to them by putting wp-admin/ after your site url, like this.

    http://tickledtango.wordpress.com/wp-admin/

Of course, some of that stuff may well send you back to the new editor.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks, but nope. I generally use the old style wp-admin and in there it does not work anymore. It is only a recent change. Less than a month or so

  • Unknown's avatar

/wp-admin/widgets.php gets me to the wp-admin widgets which still work like they have always done (as long as you don’t click on “Manage with live preview” at the top which does take you to the Calypso Customizer).

  • Unknown's avatar

Hmmm, at wp-admin/widgets.php I can drag and drop widgets from Available into the widget areas, and also drag to arrange them within the widget areas.

Can you go to the widgets page in the WP Admin dashboard and at upper right click on Screen Options and make sure that accessibility mode is disabled?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hmmm…
under screen options ( have never been there, so they must be the default settings), I have the boxes
    at a glance: ticked
    activity: ticked
    Your stuff: ticked
    What’s hot: not ticked
    Quick draft: not ticked
    WP events: ticked
    Stats: ticked

Admin preferences – always use HTTPS… not ticked

    Nothing about accessibility mode?

… and now! ooops! I went back to the widget page (just to check) and it was as it always has been! Sorry, there must be something going on behind the scene. And I am glad about that. Can we forget about this topic? As long as it doesn’t happen again.

  • I’m glad that your issue got resolved! Let us know if this happens again or if you need help with anything else.

  • Unknown's avatar

Still no further report on why wp-admin “Users” “Personal Settings” is linking to the My Sites/Calypso dashboard ? Either that shouldn’t be happening or the support document https://en.support.wordpress.com/proofreading/ needs amending.

  • @themagicrobot,

I’ve asked our developers if there are any plans to move those settings into Calypso or not.

  • Unknown's avatar

If the disabling of proofreading is not for ordinary people, I would suggest to change the support page, tell users that the proofreader cannot be disabled and remove the link to the personal settings.

Having said this, it would be nice if it could be easily switched off and on. Just a little toggle switch on the toolbar in the writer.
