Disable right-click

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m trying to find a way to disable right-click in order to protect the content on my site. I know there are plugins that will do the job, but I’m running Premium. I’ve found a couple of general CSS suggestions, but I was hoping someone might have a solution/CSS/other that is proven to work good with WP. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • Hi there!

You wouldn’t be able to do that with just CSS – unless you want to manually add code to each element on your site.

You would need to use a plugin or a JavaScript snippet.

Here you will also find some suggestions about protecting the content on your site:

    Hi!

Thank you for your reply and the link to the content protection measures. Some of the suggestions were new to me, some I have considered or followed through. The downside with many of the possible solutions or measures is of course that they somewhat affect the presentation of the content. Good suggestions though. I know there are lots of ways to grab images other than right-click, but still I believe it’s quite effective. In combination with copyright notice etc. of course. Watermarks are darn ugly though 🙂.

On my home page I use pointer-events: none; for .hentry and it works great since there is nothing in the .hentry to be clicked anyway. Obviously not a good solution for the other pages.

I guess I should consider Business and go for a plugin. Or try to find a theme that has the option to disable right-click built in. Do you know of any theme that has that option?

    Cheers!

  • Yeah, I completely agree about watermarks but sometimes it’s the only way. As you said, there isn’t really any way that would prevent someone from stealing your content so all you can do is try to make it harder.

I’m not aware of any theme that has the right-click disabled, you may want to ask on the community forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/. Here we can only advise about the features that are in-built into WordPress.com and you’d be looking for a third-party theme. To be able to upload one to your site, you would also need plan Business, same as with plugins.

Also, remember that with your plan you can access Live Chat directly via https://wordpress.com/help/contact. That way you can get help faster :).

Thanks again for your advice! I will consider Business. And try the Live Chat. Although, you were really helpful really fast! Cheers.
