disabling comments
-
the options you say exist for disabling comments don’t exist for me. I follow all the recommended steps but the box shown online on the help advise doesn’t appear. Please can you advise further before I delete this site. I didn’t come here to get into arguments with trolls or make new friends, just publish articles so I don’t want any comments! (I have tried for three hours and am getting frustrated).
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The same settings exist on each and every WordPress.com blog. All WordPress blogs by default have comments open on all Pages and Posts as in evidenced own your own blog. You can enable and disable comments on free hosted WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/You can override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/Any existing posts or pages will need to have comments disabled manually via editing. You can use the bulk edit feature in the all posts and all pages screen to make that quicker.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

thank you but this doesn’t help.
Could there be a bug in the system as the disable comments box with only two options does not appear on my screen despite following all instrutions.
I deleted my page and tried to set the option from a fresh page rather than trying altering it, as that had failed, only to get the same problem.
Not really sure where I go from here so maybe I should delete my entire site.

You had a single post and you could have used use the Discussion settings that I linked to in order to eliminate all comments on all posts.
Go to Dashboard > Settings > Discusssion and disable the settings
Discussion Settings
Default article settings
Default article settings Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
Allow people to post comments on new articles -
Do remember to scroll down and click “save changes” after you disable:
Allow people to post comments on new articles. -
I go to the dashboard, then click on settings, then on discussion on the drop down menu, and then only a whole page comes up with discussion settings written on the top. There is no disable comments on that, although there is an option to not click on allow people to post comments on new articles, (which I tried before and still had the comments box on my post and posted a comment myself).

At the top of this page

you will see what I copied and pasted above.Remove all the checkmarks and then click “save changes”
Default article settings
_Default article settings Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
_Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
_Allow people to post comments on new articles -

Good because if you disable:
_Default article settings Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
_Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks)
_Allow people to post comments on new articlesthen you are eliminating comments on posts.
