Disabling Comments on pages

I really like the way WordPress is setup. There’s a couple of things I don’t like however, and these couple of things are keeping me from continuing my use of WP.

    1)
So much wasted space. I want to keep my page simple. At the top, a “banner” style picture with a logo, and below it a menu for direction on the pages. It’s a straight down site with the top two being at the top no matter what. Not hard, but not in any of the WP themes. I don’t want two bars in the middle, esp when they use what little space WP gives for the pages…

    2)
This is probably the main reason I’m leaving… because I just can’t get rid of comments on my pages what so ever. I’ve looked up “fixes” and “how to remove them” things, but it’s just not working. At least not for me. Maybe I just don’t see the fix, maybe I’m skipping over something, who knows, but I make pages and pages -shouldn’t- have comments. If I wanted comments, I’d make a blog, or a page for a blog.

Rather than continue to learn the ins and outs and memorize all the new code out there, I’m just going to move on to a platform that will let me build what I want much easier either via Joomla for my web host or maybe just make what I want with Dreamweaver and go from there.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

All WordPress blogs by default have comments open on all Pages and Posts as in evidenced own your own blog. You can enable and disable comments on free hosted WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

You can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

blog = post based structure, attractive to search engines as it’s continually updated

website = page based structure, unattractive to search engines as the content is static and rarely updated

A blog is a website and any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based. You can use any theme here at WordPress.com to create a page based structure ie. a website rather than a post based structure ie. a blog. http://wordpress.com/themes/

    1. You can create a static front page and a page for posts.
Please be sure you fully understand the differences between Pages and Posts. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.

To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page

    2. Most but not all themes have a top horizontal menu bar. This is where tabs to static pages are displayed. However, if we want to we can create a cusom menu and display links to other items. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

    3. There are themes with either right hand or left hand sidebars and some have both. Many themes provide the ability to select a page template that hides the sidebar(s).

    4. The majority of themes have custom header and custom background features. Some have featured images in featured posts.

I have no problem with the blogs. The thing is I’m not making a blog, so I don’t have any blog pages. I have WP installed on my host server to build the pages I want, and I’ve looked at those, tried finding what it says to do and for whatever reason when I use the control + F to find what they say to either make false or delete a line altogether, it’s just not in there.

I spent 20 minutes looking through the raw code and I just couldn’t find it. I tried smaller searches for the code and it’s just not in there in one form or another.

I’d love to use WP in the future if they can make it to where pages aren’t as blog-like as they are, but I shouldn’t have to spend an hour or more trying to find a way to disable something that shouldn’t be there in the first place imho…

Rather than continue to learn the ins and outs and memorize all the new code out there,

There are no coding skills required to set up and maintain a successful free hosted WordPress.com blog.

I’m just going to move on to a platform that will let me build what I want much easier either via Joomla for my web host or maybe just make what I want with Dreamweaver and go from there.

Coding skills are required for that so best wishes regardless of what choice you make.

Oh really? It’s too bad you did not state that up front as I could have immediately told you that we do not provide support for any local installs of WordPress.ORG software here at WordPress.COM. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and you are posting to the wrong support forum.

If you don’t have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.
