Disabling Google Authenticator – Instructions Not Clear
-
I’ve tried to follow various instructions for disabling GA, but I’m either asked to input the GA code (which I can’t produce since my phone is corrupted) or clicked on links that don’t contain the “disable” button for Authenticator as described. My site is hosted at WordPress.com
I will be getting my phone’s OS reloaded, and so have no idea whether Google Authenticator will work authomatically once I re-download it to the phone, so I’d rather remove it temporarily.
These are the two forum topics I have been reading but neither produces the desired outcome.

Hi There,
I am sorry that you are having an issue with disabling your two step authentication. We would be happy to see how best this can be resolved.
When you were creating the two step authentication, you were provided with back-up codes, did you have to print or save those codes anywhere?
If you did you should be able to disable two step here: https://wordpress.com/me/security/two-step
I hope this help, please let us know if you need further assistance.

I am currently logged into WordPress right now, so there’s no way to disable it even though I am actively logged in?

Hi heatherclemenceau,
Once you are trying to disable the two step authentication, you will need to enter the back-up code. This of course is for security reasons.
It should be possible to generate a new set of back-up codes. This can only be done from a desktop browser. Let me look into this further and get back to you.

Thank you very much. I tried to set a new list of codes to my husband’s phone via my Google account but he doesn’t answer his phone so I can’t get the code to input.

Hi heatherclemenceau,
Once you are logged into your account and navigate to: https://wordpress.com/me/security/two-step
You should see the option to “Generate New Backup Codes” on the page. This would be below the option to disable the authentication.
Once the new codes are generated you would be able to use one of the codes to disable the authentication.
I hope this helps, please

All I can do on that page is “send SMS code.” There is no option to generate new backup codes.

I clicked “send SMS code” but I don’t know what happened. Nothing came through my email.

Hi heatherclemenceau,
Sorry to hear that you are not seeing the option the generate new back up codes.
I have added the modlook tag to this thread so that one of WordPress.com Happiness Engineer can take a look at this to assist you further.

The SMS code would go to the telephone number that you entered when you originally set up the two-step authentication.

HI there,
If Google Authenticator on your phone no longer works, or you had to reset/replace your phone, the only way to disable two step authentication is with a backup code, or a single use code we send by SMS to the recovery phone number listed in your account. You’ll only be able to use that if you still use the same phone number that you originally added in your account.
All I can do on that page is “send SMS code.” There is no option to generate new backup codes.
You should see all these options on that page:
