Disabling Reblogging
-
Hi,
There’s a user who is reblogging to her private blog my posts. I don’t want that. I don’t reblogging, and not at all if it goes to a private blog.
Can I stop that?
Thank you.

No, there’s nothing you can do to stop people from reblogging your work except make your own blog private.
You can add a banner in each post with a copyright notice and maybe an anti-reblogging statement– so it gets reblogged along with your work — or add something in your sidebar asking people not to reblog your work.
-
If you are that concerned about it, you might try making a post saying, “So-and-so why are you reblogging all my posts to your private blog? Without equality of exposure, I’m concerned about what may be happening to my work. Please contact me via the contact form on my blog and let’s come to an understanding.”

Hi WordPress.com,
I just moved my blog from Tumblr to WordPress because I DON’T like Tumblr’s reblogging function.
I post photographs on my blog and they are under copyright so I don’t want them spread around the internet.
Is there no way that WordPress.Com can offer a function so that re-blogging can be turned off?

When they first introduced reblogging, there were heated discussions over this and there was no joy for those that wanted someway to disable it, so I don’t expect they will do it now.

You need to be aware that automatic reblogging is new, but reblogging itself is as old as the web. BoingBoing.net has been doing it since I think 1992. There is no way to prevent it, short of going for the sort of copyprotection Wikileaks has, which renders all copy-pastes of their site a bizarre selection of random letters. And WP.com is never going to do that, because people LIKE to reblog. There are far more “Oh lookit that” people in the world than there are “have you ever thought of this” people.
-
How are you going to differentiate yourselves from other Blog sites? I will have to seriously consider whether I am going to keep using WordPress.Com. I don’t understand why you can’t give people the option to choose whether they have control over their content or not.
– A very disappointed user.

Reblogging might be as old as the web, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a setting to disable it. A lot of people who are personally creating their own content will want to have this as an option so they can protect their content.

As I said above, it’s not possible to protect against reblogging. Copy/paste is just dead easy.
If you feel your content has been stolen, DMCA the blogger. Copy the host. That goes whether it’s an official “reblog” or not.
If you post it online it will get copied. What happens after that is up to you.

@birdnoises, before there was a button to reblog (which at least fits within the general guidelines of fair use and gives you credit with a link back) people would just copy and paste. Not having reblogging on a service doesn’t stop people posting your stuff. I used to do 5 or 6 DMCA violation notices a week sometimes back before even tumblr had the reblogging feature.
Not having reblogging does NOT stop content reposting. That is just the way it is on the web. If you don’t want your stuff copied, DON’T put it on the web. If you do, someone is going to take it and repost it and they may give you a link or they may not. They may claim it as their own, or they may not.
