Disadvantage to using wordpress.com
-
What is the main down-side to using wordpress.com instead of setting up your own blog with your own hosting? I know there are obvious advantages in terms of ease-of-use, but what is the disadvantage? Will I see ads on my pages? Are there important features I won’t have access to? Thanks.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There are ads that WP.com puts on your blog (most regular readers won’t see them), you can’t use javascript, you can’t use flash, you can’t use plugins, and you can’t have blogger-initiated ads or pay per post, etc. Also, retailing is subject to staff approval and you won’t be able to use ecommerce features without getting an external page to put them on.

These posts lay out the differences https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/please-read-me-first-before-posting?replies=1

Disadvantages -> no flash, no iframes or other embeds, no javascript and lack of complete control over your template

Disadvantages continued – lrestrictions on making an income from advertising and/or affiliate schemes, direct sales, etc. as there is no blogger initiated advertising on wordpress.COM blogs and we cannot use a wordpress.COM blog to drive traffic to third party sites.

Advantages of having your own domain
If you intend to use a blog in any commercial way and/or to create a professional reputation then you are best served to purchase a domain at your earliest opportunity, whether or not you decide to stay at wordpress.com or self host a wordpress.org blog. This is because blogs on subdomains like wordpress.com or blogspot lack the credibility that those on their own domains have. A domain name tends to give your website an aura of respectability, and getting your own domain means you can have an email address and blog on the same domain.
Having your own domain means you can include keywords in the URL and title and tagline that reflect your “brand” and makes it easier for your readers to recall it and locate it and/or products and services you are selling or offering free of charge. Having your own domain includes having email an domain based email address as well.
1. Build your own brand and credibility
2. Easy location
3. Better search engine ranking
4. Your domain name name is your own and it’s portable
5. Complete control of your template -

This is a good post thanks for posting this question because alot of us are finding the disadvanages of using WP.com the hard way

I think all of what has been said above can be found at the links I posted in support documentation and probably in the searchbox too. Because these things have been discussed many times since I’ve been around.

I think it also depends on what you want to use your blog for. Like wp.COM is perfect for me, I like it simple and don’t want to have to go through the whole hooplah of taking care of my own domain.

Unless your a full on web designer and/or programmer (there is a difference) the advantages of having your own domain/hosting out weight the disadvantages of not having it, your right Bats it all depends on what you need it for, simply posting post and cht chat then WP might work, but if you need something a little more detailed then one might want to look into other options…saves you the head ache besides thats what web pros paid for.
