Disappearing LIKES

  • Unknown's avatar

We’ve been having a similar problem with LIKES.

Today, we currently have about 20 LIKES on our post Homemade Brownie Ice Cream – see: Homemade Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream
but the LIKES keep dropping back to 1 LIKE. Please advise.

Note that our stats are not real time stats. For details see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/ and note the views and viewers take hours to update. Also note that those who follow your blog in the Reader or by email don’t have to click into the blog unless they wish to.

Likes make us feel warm and fuzzy but they are not page view stats. In fact, likes, shares and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats. Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com blog who is logged into WordPress.com can “like”, “share” and “reblog” your posts in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat.

You can control the length of the entry sent out on your RSS feed here > Settings > Reading. Choose the “summary” setting for your RSS feed rather than to “full text”. That will compel followers who are not using mobiles to click into the blog to read the full post which will create a page view stat.

Visitors using a mobile can read the full post without creating a page view stat. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373606

Note that setting the RSS Feed to summary does not affect the length of the post displayed on the front page or main page for posts on the blog. To create excerpts there we can split content by inserting “the more tag” http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/

Also note that you can disable “Sharing” on the same page:
    Settings > Reading
Add to each article in your feed:
    Categories
    Tags
    Comment count
    Sharing
Changes may not appear until you create a new post or your news reader refreshes.

Thanks for responding timethief. Our concern is that there is clearly some glitch with “likes” that has been occurring recently. It does matter, we think, because “likes” help create buzz. Often times it seems that the more likes a blog gets, the more traffic it continues to get.
Again, clearly something is not quite working – we did notice that someone else had queried a similar/same topic. Had hoped that WordPress would look into this. Thanks.

Did you note what I said above?

I’ll tag this thread for Staff to take a look at your likes. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting

Staff deal with threads tagged for their attention in datestamp and timestamp order. Every time this thread is posted to that timestamp moves forward. It’s in your best interest to wait patiently for Staff help without posting into the thread again.

  • Hi Barbra & Jack!

Is this issue still happening for you? I was unable to replicate it on the post you linked to, so if you can see it happen again (on this post or another) please take a screenshot and upload it to your Media Library (Media > Add New) and let me know. We can then investigate further for you.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the response. We don’t know if this is happening to older posts, but lately, on every new post, the number of “likes” keeps going up and down. At times there may be 20 likes or more. Then, when a new “Like” appears, the count goes back to 1 or 2. This is happening both in terms of the numbers shown on our stats page and on the reader page, and is also happening with the gravatars on the post itself.
It’s bugging us because, among other things, we believe that on the reader page the more “likes” that are registered, the more likely it is that other readers will look at the blog. “Likes” seem to create buzz, so to speak.
I took two screen shots at about 5:00 PM Alaska time. As you can see, on the stats page it shows just two likes; on the reader page it shows 20 likes for the same post. Only moments earlier, on the post itself, it showed only 15 gravatars while simultaneously indicating a numerical 2 for likes, and yet now it shows all 20 gravatars with the numerical 20. It’s been like this for the past few days, with “likes” appearing, and disappearing, and so forth. At times all numbers sync up. But the pattern lately has been that these periods of synchronistic are short-lived, with numbers going backwards and gravatars disappearing and later reappearing.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi there.

Thanks very much for the additional information.

Just to clarify, where are each of these screenshots from?

    1) Image one with Likes 20 – where did you take this screenshot?

    2) Where did you take this notification screen shot from?

If possible I need a screenshots of your Post page, for example: http://cutterlight.com/2013/12/27/rustic-pear-gallette-with-whole-wheat-blend-crust/
or any post, with this behavior occurring. For example a screenshot of when you see it with 2 Likes, then with 20 then when it goes back down to 5 – or whatever the numbers are, with the times these were taken.

I know this will take a little effort, but in order for us to investigate we need to see it happening and when it was happening and be able to duplicate it.

Then hopefully we can get to learn the reason for this occurring.

Regarding the actual Stats page itself, as timethief said:

Note that our stats are not real time stats. For details see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/ and note the views and viewers take hours to update. Also note that those who follow your blog in the Reader or by email don’t have to click into the blog unless they wish to.

    Many thanks!

    Hi Joel:
    1) “Image one with Likes 20 – where did you take this screenshot?” That shot was taken on a Reader Page, under the topic “Homesteading” though the specific topic doesn’t seem to matter. http://wordpress.com/tag/homesteading/
    2) “Where did you take this notification screen shot from?” This was taken from our Dashboard: http://donachyblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
At approx 10:30 a.m. Alaska time, to the media page I uploaded a screen shot from our most recent post: http://cutterlight.com/2013/12/28/swiss-spitzbueben-cookies-featuring-alaskan-wild-blueberry-jam/
The screen shot shows the drop-down menu showing 12 Likes while on the post itself it says “One blogger likes this.” Only moments ago, these two items were synched up with both showing the correct 11 likes.
At the same time, the reader page continues to go up and down in similar fashion.
I will try to get a shot where there are multiple gravatars while the corresponding number does not match on the post itself.
Thanks a lot for your help. It’s become a matter of curiosity.

One other thing I just put together. Each time the Likes revert back to one or two, it seems they are recording only the first Like posted, or the first two likes posted. For example, the Star just lit up with a “like.” I clicked on it. It showed only 1 like, this “like” being from the very first person who liked the post. In reality, there are about 13 likes at this point. But when I went to the Reader page, it, too, showed only 1 like – down from the previous 12 likes it was registering. Same on the post itself. Back down to 1 like.

I am having a similar thing, the notifications star keeps coming up to say someone has liked the page but it is stuck on 5 likes, but I know there have been a lot more than that, but it doesn’t change. There is clearly a problem.
Even that is wrong, there are 6 gravatar images, but it says only 5 likes. This is a new problem for me.

  • Thanks for all the information!

I’ve contacted the team to look a this further, thanks for you patience.

  • Unknown's avatar

My likes are the same ones, it doesn’t change, according to my email notifications there should be over 20, not the 5 is says I have.

  • Unknown's avatar

All good now, seems to be working again. Thanks

I uploaded a screen shot showing a discrepancy between “likes” and number of gravatars to cutterlight.com’s media library. This information refers to today’s post at http://cutterlight.com/2013/12/28/swiss-spitzbueben-cookies-featuring-alaskan-wild-blueberry-jam/

The uploaded screenshot shows the number of gravatars and the stated number of Likes not matching. (7:35 p.m. Alaska) it’s showing 36 gravatars but only 23 likes. Oddly, “23” is a number that the “likes” seems to keep getting stuck on.

Approximately one hour prior, the number of gravatars and likes did match, with both showing 36.

This problem continues through Saturday despite your remedies…http://swittersb.wordpress.com likes don’t accumulate. Fuzzy feelings or not tell them to figure it out…please! We are a network of support and friendships…you promote it…so don’t belittle it TimeThief!

Hi Joel, At approx. 1:45 p.m. Alaska time, I uploaded another screen shot to cutterlight.com media file. This one shows the dash board page with the “notifications” drop-down. As you can see, the “Likes” are all over the place. At the top, it identifies that two people liked the most recent post. But right below that, in the same drop-down, it shows about 10 gravatars. Below that, in the same drop-down, there is yet another comment that says, “One people liked it so far…”
    Crazy, right?

  • Hi again!

Just to follow up that the team are still looking into any issues and as soon as I know I will update you.

Thanks for the updates and have a happy New Year!

  • Unknown's avatar

We have the same problem – seemed to happen for the first time yesterday but is a definite change from previous times. Hey ho – will be running with the gravatars for now and hope that it’s sorted soon .
