Disappearing links

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear Sirs,

    All my links have just disappeared. I can see them listed as sites I’ve clicked on within my ‘Stats’ page but my links list is empty and so none are showing on my sidebar.

    Is there any way I can reinstate them without re-entering them all? I didn’t click in anything to delete them so have no idea why they’ve disappeared. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks.

    Are you referring to the Links widget?
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/links-widget/
    Have you checked here > Appearance > Widgets and made sure it isn’t in the Inactive widget’s box?

  • Unknown's avatar

    No, every single link I had has gone. I had separate links widgets on my sidebar for four different things. The widgets are still there but there isn’t a single link on the list.

    You’re not the only one. I have 4 categories of links in my sidebar, and each has vanished in turn from the sidebar, and none are listed in the Links section of the Dashboard, although all my categories still exist.

    @timethief
    Not in my case. Links have simply vanished from the sidebar and are no longer listed in the Links section of my dashboard (which now simply reads “no links found”).

    Good grief! Has this just happened today? Do you think there’s just a problem at WordPress and they may reappear? I feel sick at the moment, I worked so hard to build my blog up!

  • Unknown's avatar

    PS. ^ Sounds exactly the same as my problem.

    That could be because the Links were to be eliminated in upcoming versions. I recall that being stated some time ago now. I’ll tag this thread for a Staff resp[onse. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and please be patient while waiting.

    @juliafurniss
    I only noticed as a result of someone pinging me to ask why I’d “removed” my link categories. I’d actually updated one category earlier today, and used another, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s a very recent happening.

    I notice another thread on this subject has been hidden pending a response from staff.

    @timethief
    Can you elaborate on “Links were to be eliminated in upcoming versions. I recall that being stated some time ago now”

    Are you saying the capability to have lists of links were to be removed from WordPress? Given the vapability is a fairly basic function of any blog, that seems somewhat extreme as a course of action. Was there to be a replacement?

  • Unknown's avatar

    bleah.. vapability = capability. Never get distracted by a cat while typing…

    I have to echo the question: “Links were to be eliminated in upcoming versions”??

    Why? There seems to be some strategy of just annoying people periodically.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I spotted this thread in the WordPress.com support forum awhile back.

    The Links section was removed from the core WordPress.org software, which means that it will probably be removed from WordPress.com soon.

    In preparation for that, new blogs no longer display the Links section.

    Instead of using Links and a Links Widget, I recommend creating a Custom Menu and a Custom Menu Widget.

    See this for more info and a video tutorial: http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

    Again, why? This makes no sense if true.

  • Unknown's avatar

    OK … Under the “new” Links widget, it appears you can only select *one* category of links which can be displayed on a blog, as categories are now in a drop-down list. However, I’ve yet to successfully display any category other than my “default” blogroll doing this.

    Nor does selecting a second Links widget and setting it to an alternative category seem to do anything – only the “default” link list will display.

    Also, while I can now display a list of links, I still cannot edit it through the dashboard.

    I am not even sure that my theme supports custom menus.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Every theme supports custom menus.

  • Unknown's avatar

    OK, phew. My theme is actually a “retired theme” that I happen to like, so I’m glad to hear this.

  • Unknown's avatar

    Well, that’s just peachy.

    Thanks, WordPress. Are you trying to lose users?

    I have a theme which suits my needs and in which I’ve already spent a good number of hours building a custom menu.

    Now you’re saying I have to tear it down just so I can support links?!

    There have been some idiotic decisions made WRT to WordPress.com, but this one must be close to taking the biscuit.

  • Unknown's avatar

    OK. So what about my links that have gone? Is it just my tough luck or are they still stored somewhere?

    How were people supposed to know this was happening? I’d have been happy to transfer them over to a custom menu or pay a subscription if its the fact I have a free version that was the problem. Just having everything disappear without warning is pretty sickening.

    There seems to be some strategy of just annoying people periodically. Can’t say it any other way.

    “Annoying people” AKA geeting them to up sticks and move elsewhere.
