Disappearing links

I, probably stupidly, used my links (blog roll) to access blogs I enjoy reading, in addition to using it as a referrer to those blogs. I sure don’t know the urls of all those blogs by heart so unless they comment on my blog, I’ve just lost all those contacts. I wish I could just access them all for my own use, I don’t care that much that my blog roll is gone. I just assumed I could always get to them. What else will disappear someday? All my old posts?

Please do not leap to any conclusions. Staff have yet to respond.If you are concerned about losing the URLs in your Links widget then you can go Google’s cached docs and locate them there and copy and paste them onto a static page in Visual mode which you can leave as a draft at this stage so it’s a backup.

OK… weirdness abounds.
I started setting-up a custom sidebar menu for my links, and in refreshing the view to check the appearance of the menu on my home page, I found that my Links widget is once again displaying all links and link categories.
Further, on accessing the Links page on my dashboard, all links and categories are once again listed and editable.
I’m now baffled as to what is going on…..

Well, that is partially helpful, Timethief, so thank you. It doesn’t give me the actual urls, though, so I’ll have to google all of them to find them. I also had a lot of other links that were not visible so I can’t locate them. But thank you for this. It’s a partial workaround.

No you do not have to look up URLs.1. Click this link and create a draft static page

@peysworld, that is weird. I just checked mine again and one of the 3 categories of blog rolls that I had has reappeared. The other 2 are still MIA but I hope they magically reappear, too. At any rate, when I get home from work, I will be making a copy of all those urls again because it sounds like they will disappear for good at some point.

To add to the above you are not alone, I too and SocialEyeNYC cannot use links/prvious tags/add media/photos. Not a live soul to help. Many of us have spent years to work and build on out blogs and then we are left type posts into thin air on this thread begging for help. I have followed all of ‘timethief’ (very appropraitely named in this case) advice and nothing helps. So we are supposed to sit here and wait from the hallowed words form the “WordPress” gods? Outrageous.

@shutterpug – I’d love to answer you on my blog – – – but THAT link doesn’t work either as WordPress implodes. Anybody know of an alternative site to go to? If we do, what happens to all out hard worked blogs and photos?

That does not help resolve the issue so why post it at all? Are you not reading my responses to you like this one?Staff work through all forum threads tagged for their attention in order of datestamps and timestamps – first posted first served, as would be expected.
When bloggers keep bumping any thread thinking they are going to get service from Staff more quickly they aren’t thinking straight because that moves the timestamps forward and it takes longer to get a response.
WordPress.com Staff don’t post into threads to say words like “we know there’s an issue and don’t have it fixed yet – we are working on it as fast as we can” because would be a waste of their time and ours.
Bottom line: Patience is virtue.

Your answer speaks volumes. WordPress cannot “waste time” on asnwering or posting to us. Whatever happened to an email blast to users?
Customer service and care is a forgotten “virtue”. -
Pingbacks have not been working, at least for some users, for the past month. I wonder whether this is part of the same problem/set of changes.

Just one final question… If this was a ‘glitch’, what does the original message (copy posted here earlier) from a few months ago about links going mean, then? Are our blog roll links going to disappear for good at some point or not?
I was joking about phoning WordPress last night. No way was I in the mood to talk a ‘Happiness Engineer’! :-D
Although I’m quite happy now, I could have done without wasting time last night dealing with this when I should have been planning lessons. Perhaps next time, a blanket message to users would be a more sensible way to deal with this sort of situation. Ignorance is NOT always bliss.

Yes, apparently so but that is now my new question.
I originally (like many on here) asked if anyone knew why my links had suddenly disppeared. Within seconds, there were several replies stating that WordPress had announced that links/blogrolls were being removed sevferal months ago. It was implied, therefore, that this is what happened. The two may not actually be linked, if yesterday’s incident was due to a ‘glitch’ (and, of course, all seems well again now, thank goodness) but my question is – What did the original ‘getting rid of links’ message refer to? Are our existing links safe or should we be taking steps to put them somewhere else on our blogs?
