Disappearing photos

I am using the free version of WordPress, Photos from my earlier posts have disappeared. Instead of a photo, there is now an icon where the photo should be. Also, those same photos seem to have disappeared from my Media section as well, and I did not remove them from anywhere (not my blog, and not my computer). Only some photos are missing from my February 2016 post, and every photo is gone from all the posts before February 2016. Can anyone give me an explanation? I don’t want to lose any more. Thanks!

Hi @sbeardsmith, I’m sorry to hear that! Someone who was logged in as you deleted several images a few weeks ago — and those are likely the images that are missing now. It looks like your account has been clearing out media periodically, possibly to save space? :/ But when you remove the images, they can’t be displayed on the site.

I have the same problem with photos – the older are gone, don’t shows up on my blogs. I didn’t do anything to make them disappeared :-( What to do to restore my photos? All before March 18 are gone :(

Hi, Supernovia! Thanks for your reply and sorry not to have responded right away after you attempted to help. I remove photos when I decide not to use them in my blog, so I’m sure the activity you saw was me. However, the photos I’m missing were all in my older blog posts and I did not remove any of them from my web site media. I have been very careful about removing photos, as that caused me a problem in the past when I used a different free blog site. So when I switched to WordPress, I knew that I should never remove a photo that I use in a blog post.. There is something different going on, and no one seems to be able to help. I know that I never removed them myself, and they disappeared much longer ago than a few weeks. I noticed the problem months ago, but never had time to try to do anything about it until recently. It seems strange that all photos from several posts disappeared but nothing has disappeared in over 3 years. When I get a chance, I intend to check my media section to see if the photos are gone from there. If they have disappeared for some reason, it wasn’t me. Thanks!

Hi, it’s me again after my reply to Supernovia. I just checked my media section, and all the photos that are missing from my blog posts are missing from my site media. I did not remove them, so what could have happened? Thank goodness I’m not paying to use the site, otherwise I would be extremely unhappy. I hope someone can tell me what the problem is. Thanks!

I see al those missing photos are not in your media, but are coming from an external site; e.g. https://i0.wp.com/dalekirejs.blox.pl/resource/P1060607.JPG. When I check that image directly dalekirejs.blox.pl/resource/P1060607.JPG, I get an error saying that image no longer exists.

Staartmes, this is adress of my old blog, which i copied to a WordPress in Marchwith all photos and texts, one by one, for few weeks. All worked great for few months and then, one or two months ago all photos are gone. My current blog is: distantcruise.video.blog and mycastle.video.blog

I’m not really sure about any specific posts where I might have removed photos from my site media before publishing a post, but it’s possible that I did that in the last two posts, July 2019 and May 2019.
Absolutely all the photos are gone from my media and my posts starting from my January 2016 and on back. My February 2016 post has some missing photos, but most are there. Some of the posts are very important memories for my family and me, and I hate to lose the photos from them. I still have them on my computer, but I don’t have the time to go back and see if uploading them to the site again would help. Also I’m afraid it would just gum up the works even further.
I did some research in my financial records to see if I did anything that may have contributed to the problem. Back in 2015 I did a trial run of a paid WordPress plan and used Bluehost as my provider (did I say that correctly?). I cancelled that pretty quickly because I was having more problems with the paid plan than I did on the free plan.
One other possibility I looked into was the purchase of the laptop I currently use. I purchased it in mid 2016, well after the dates of the missing photos, so I don’t think it’s relevant. Just thought I’d give you the information in case it would help.

Neither the BlueHost purchase nor the laptop would of had an effect like what you’re experiencing. I want to confirm that the missing images are from the library on sbeardsmith.wordpress.com? Or is it a different site?

Hi again, that is indeed the site where someone cleared several images out of the media library about a month ago.
I did not remove them, so what could have happened?
Our records show that “sbeardsmith” removed them and in fact that “sbeardsmith” has done this before.
Do you leave yourself logged into computers that others can access?
Do you ever go to wordpress.com/media and delete images there?

I suppose I have not made myself clear enough, so let me try once more. I have recently removed a FEW photos from my library that I DID NOT use in ANY posts. ALL of the photos from the January 2016 post and in ALL the posts before that post are gone. I DID NOT remove those photos. I have never removed whole blocks of photos like that. My computer is completely private. Which photos do you say I have removed? Can you point out what posts, etc., that you are seeing this? I have a feeling you are referring to photos that I never used in a post.

We’re not looking at any posts. We’re looking at the file logs for your site. Those show that on 25 July, 15 files were deleted from the media library; on 15 July, 13 files; between 11 and 14 May, 24 files; on 1 March, 18 files; on 5 February, 9 files, etc. Our logs show your account regularly deleting large blocks of files all the way back through 2016.
On 24 October 2016 specifically, our logs show your account bulk-deleting over 300 files uploaded between June 2015 and February 2016, which would explain the missing images from posts published January 2016 and earlier.
Deleted media files cannot be restored, and those files were deleted so long ago that we don’t even have backups of your site old enough to still contain those images, so there’s nothing we can do in this case.

Ok, that tells me a lot, and I appreciate the information. I cannot explain the bulk delete of over 300 photos on 10/24/16 and know I would remember if I had deleted that much in one day. The other dates coincide with what I’ve done. At least this knowledge let’s me know what I should do in moving forward. Thanks for checking into it for me, and hope you all have a great week!
