disappearing sidebar
-
Yesterday I was doing some routine link changes for some entries in my sidebar, but after I finished updating I checked the main page to make sure they worked, and the entire sidebar had mysteriously vanished. Search bar, calendar, archives, categories, everything…
I thought it was just a bug in WordPress that had been affecting me lately (frequently timed out or incorrect logins, categories changing to drop down list with title “a”, also a short bout of disappearing sidebar which fixed itself), so i gave it some time thinking it would fix itself, but it still hasn’t.
I found out something interesting today though. On the main page the sidebar is completely gone, but if I click on a post to bring up that individual post and the comments within, that page shows the sidebar fully intact and functional.
I thought it might be the links that I updated, but I update those regularly, and even if I make a mistake, it only affects that particular link and not the entire sidebar. Does anybody know what’s going on?

Your sidebar is still there, but it’s pushed all the way over to the right. I’ve read about sidebars getting pushed to the bottom when people put a too wide picture into a post.
Perhaps this will help:

hmm…I checked out the suggestion there. Changed to one post and went backwards through my posts. When they are all displayed (default 10 at a time), the sidebar is pushed to the right. If I go one by one, the sidebar is completely fine! It doesn’t seem to be caused by any content from either the new post or the sidebar…
I even went through all the new links I changed in the sidebar (because they have images to go with them) and took out each one individually to see if that changed anything, and it didn’t. All my image sizes have been the same ever since I switched to this theme too (which has variable width btw), so I don’t think it is the images in my posts that are causing the problem.
I’ve only updated once since this started happening. Before that the only thing I updated was the sidebar, and it seemed to be fine before that, so all signs point to my latest update to the sidebar. BUT I don’t see anything wrong with what I changed. The images are the same sizes they always have been, the link titles are numbered 01-07 to keep them in order, not to mention as I said before, when I go to each individual post (checked back to my updates in November), the sidebar works totally fine.

It’s something in one of the posts on the first page because when you go to the previous page, everything is alright.
Try this: Go to settings > writing and select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click “save changes.”
Next, start with your latest post, open it for edit, change one minor thing (such as removing a space between words and then putting it back in) and then save the post. Go to your blog then and force reload the page and see if the problem is gone.
The W3C XHTML validator says you have 94 errors on your main page. That number may not be entirely correct since one error higher up in a page can mistakenly make other errors lower down in the page.

Hmm thanks! Looks like that did the trick. It was my second post down apparently, though i could’ve sworn it was working fine before. Didn’t get a chance to figure out what I did wrong in there though.
What is the W3C XHTML validator you mentioned?

@yuuwaku, glad that worked for you. Sometimes a tag will somehow get in the wrong place, sometimes when you edit something or whatever. I’ve had it happen as well and with the change to settings > writing I mentioned, it seems to keep things straightened out quite nicely for me.
There is also a very useful button on the lower toolbar in the editor called “remove formatting”. That would have been my next suggestion if the first did not work. If you run into trouble again, and the first suggestion doesn’t work, select everything in the post, click the remove formatting button and then click save. Check to see if it straightens things out, and if so then you can go back in and add back in any formatting you need.

ahhh thanks I see it! I guess I missed that one when making the post. I copied from my previous posts so I thought everything should have been ok. I did use a new posting format for those two so I def. must have missed it! Thanks everybody for your help.
