Disaster strikes Drag and Drop in Classic Editors

  • Unknown's avatar

It seems that WordPress has purposely removed Tags and Publish and other modules from the main block to positions below and Drag and Drop will not move them back. I tested this on three blogs and even changed my theme looking to get correct locations for these modules. This is a disaster. This results in the blogger having to constantly need to scroll from text and images in the main body of the post to reach the modules to enter tags, save drafts and ultimately reach Publish.

This is a huge waste of time and leads to confusion.

WordPress must reverse this policy and restore Drag and Drop to usability or WordPress will lose bloggers to other platforms and we will take our readers with us.

WordPress has chosen to try and influence bloggers to use the block editor format, which we despise and give up our Classic editors.

    This is a poor policy.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hm-I can drag and drop the modules in the full Classic Editor without problem in Win10 and Firefox. Do you see the dotted lines when you “pick up” a module to move it?

Have you tried clicking the “screen options” tab to disable and then re-enable those modules to see if they return to a different position?

Also, have you tried clearing your browser’s cache and cookies? https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/

If you are still encountering this issue, let us know what browser and OS you’re using.

Thanks for your reply. I am on Firefox on one Win 10 and one Win 11 computer.

I had cleared my cache prior to trying to Drag and Drop. I followed your suggestion about “Screen Options”, closed the empty editor and re-opened it to try to move “Tags” and “Publish” but the modules would not move. They are below the main block and I cannot move them back into their positions in the main block.

I forgot to say that I also tried this in Chrome with the same results.

Another problem in the currently used theme “Independent Publisher 2” places “Tags” below “Related” which renders them essentially useless as most readers will not go that far. I gave up “P2 Classic” which I know is “retired” but was excellent and I wish I could get it back.

Do you see the dotted lines when you “pick up” a module to move it?

    You haven’t answered this.

There are also arrows on each module so that you can move them up and down without using drag and drop, but I understand from your original post that some modules have moved below the editing box.

Have you tried switching the Layout in Screen Options to 1 Column instead of 2 and then back?

One other thing you might try is disabling any browser extensions you have to see if one of them is causing this issue.

Have you tried drag and drop on other web sites or somewhere else in the interface, like your site’s WP Admin dashboard? Otherwise I’m out of suggestions.

Thanks for your help. I did disable browser extensions. I did try Drag & Drop in Chrome.

Not sure what to do in the WP Admin dashboard.

The intent was to try dragging the modules available in the WP Admin dashboard (At a Glance, Activity,Your Stuff, etc.) to see if you were able to move those modules.

In the end, I was able to rearrange the position of the Post/Page Editor’s Screen Option modules by clicking on the arrow buttons to move them up and down rather than dragging and dropping.

Clicking on the up arrow on the first/top module under the editing box moved the module over to the bottom of the right sidebar. Then I could arrange the modules by using the up and down arrows.

    Hope that helps.

The switch to 2 columns seems to have done the trick.

I will see what happens before i mark the issue resolved.

I finished a blog post and went on to a new article and the wp theme opened properly, so the issue seems to be resolved. However I am not prepared to mark it resolved because there is still one problem. My “Tags” are showing up at the bottom of the post below a normally very long institution description and below “Related”. This is a problem because I work very hard to have useful tags and their location at the bottom of the post means that most people will not read them. Is there a way in Independent Publisher 2 theme to get the tags up at the top?

Since I gave up my P2 Classic theme in searching for a corrective measure I am willing to again change themes to get the tags up where they belong. Can you recommend another free theme with all of the necessary tools which I could use to get the tags up where they belong?

    Thanks for your help.

First, I did answer the question of seeing the dotted lines which I did see.

What I would like to know is there any way for me to get back the P2 Classic theme? I know it was “retired” but I think this was a tragic mistake. It is an eminently useful theme and should again be made available. Is there any way for me to get back the P2 Classic theme?

    Thanks.

Do you mean the Tags module in the Post Editor? If so, then use the up arrow to change its position in the sidebar.

If you mean the Tags that appear at the end of your blog post after publishing it, that’s an entirely different issue from the one you originally requested help with here.

My 2¢: TBH given the length of your articles, it’s really not a stretch to continue scrolling to see those Tags. It might not be worth the effort to switch themes if you like IP2 overall, especially since you’ve also included a Tag Cloud in your blog’s sidebar.

But, if you want to change themes regardless, I’d suggest going through the older themes and looking both at the Showcase description and the demo site, and if possible preview the theme with your content.

You can narrow down your choices by using the filters in the Showcase, and those filters are only available in the Appearance>Themes>Default View and you have to place your cursor in the search box for those filters to appear.

If you need more help with theme selection, I’d suggest creating a new forum topic for it.

    Again, hope that helps.

I know that the Tag placement at the bottom of my posts is a new issue. I am only continuing it here because it is an unfortunate result of my changing themes to try to solve my original problem. If I had been made aware of the column change at the beginning of this discussion I could have solved my problem without changing themes.

I will be happy to start a new Forum topic asking about how to get back my P2 Classic theme.

One should never be in a hurry to change out a retired theme. :/

Hope you have good luck in recovering P2 Classic.
