Disconnecting a domain from wordpress

  Hi, I am trying to connect my domain name to another hosting service. Previously the domain has been hosted by wordpress.com. I have deleted the wordpress website associated with the domain but the hosting service I am trying to connect to is still saying the domain is already hosted. How long does it usually take to disconnect?
