Discrepancy between amount of followers displayed on blog, versus how many my stats say I have

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there, I’ve recently noticed a discrepancy between amount of followers displayed on my blog (this number appears to be 69 followers), versus how many my stats say I have (around 15, I think). I’m a bit confused! Obviously, I’m hoping that the larger number is the correct one, but if it’s not then I want the accurate number to be displayed publicly. Am I missing something fundamental about how WordPress works here? If there are more than what I can see in my stats, should I be able to see all of these followers? Thank you for your time and help on this! Cheers, Megan

    Hi,

    See the “Follower Totals” listed at My Sites (Stats) > Insights, where subtotals are listed in three categories: WordPress.com member followers, Email followers, and Social Media followers. The combined total of those three subtotals is probably the larger figure you refer to. The big difference might reflect a relatively large amount of social media followers compared to WordPress.com member and email followers.

    The My Followers support page might be helpful in interpreting what you see in the stats.

    Our stats are page view stats. If I visit your blog and click into 10 posts that will be recorded as 1 visitor and 10 page views. But please do not assume that everyone who clicks a follow, like, share, reblog or comment link actually reads the post on your blog because odds are they may not.

    Follow, like, share, reblog or comment clicks are not page views. In fact, follows, likes, shares, comments and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats.

    Your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com/Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can “follow” your blog, “like”, “share” and “reblog” your posts and “comment” in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat. Subscribers control how frequently they receive your posts (instantly, daily, weekly) and can comment without clicking into the blog.

    Logged in visitors using a mobile can read the full post without creating a page view stat. https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/wordpresscom-reader-show-full-text?replies=31#post-1373606

    Your wordpress.com subscribers are found here https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog_subscribers

    You can also use: https://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=stats

    *replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL with the actual name of your site.

    Note that the title there includes Publicize followers from social networks. https://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/

    Your email only subscribers are here https://wordpress.com/my-stats/?blog_subscribers&type=email

    @timethief,
    Now worries. You’ve probably responded to 87 topics while I fed the cat. : )

    @meghemmings,

    If there are more than what I can see in my stats, should I be able to see all of these followers?

    This may replicate some of the informaton provided by @timethief. WordPress.com and Email followers can be found via My Sites > Insights.

    • WordPress.com Followers — Some of the recent followers are listed. To see all of them, click the “view all” link at the bottom of the list.
    • Email followers — Click on the button labeled WordPress.com followers to display the “Email followers” link. Click on that link to display recent Email followers instead of the recent WordPress.com followers. Click the “View All” button to display all of the Email followers.

    Regarding social media followers, see the Social Media Followers section of the My Followers support page.

    Correction:
    I think I meant “no worries.” “Now worries” is what I presently have about going dyslexic in my old age. : )
