Display all categories – please help

  I cannot get all the categories to display on the sidebar. I have the categories widget installed and “uncategorized” appears, but not the other categories. The FAQs say that in order for a category to appear, one published post has to be assigned to the category. I do not understand how to assign the post. There doesn’t seem to be an assignment capability in the edit function either. Would appreciate help or reference to a FAQ that covers this.

  On the write post page, in the column of blue bars at the right of the text area, at the top, is “categories.” When you write a post, you select the categories that you want assigned to that post.

  Thanks very much. When I tried to do that before I did not have the category list on the right side of the screen. It is there now.
