Display another author’s name

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have added a new Editor to my site.

    However, I have found that his name was not displayed under the article’s title. My website’s theme is K2-lite which does not display author names.

    I have contacted WordPress.com staff and one of them told me that I need to purchase the CSS upgrade to get the desired result.

    I have already done so (i.e. already bought CSS upgrade) but I do not know how to write CSS codes to get my desired result, which is to display authors’ names under the post’s title.

    Can anybody help?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    I’m surprised that anyone who lacks CSS editing experience would pay for an annually renewable CSS upgrade just to do this (1) when switching to another them that does display author’s names is an option, and (2) they have no CSS editing experience. See > authors displayed or not http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/category/authors/

    Since there is no official support for the CSS upgrade, and very little volunteer support, I don’t recommend that member’s purchase the annually renewable upgrade unless they have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because they must be prepared to do the work on your own.

    However as you have already made your decision you will now have to wait patiently for one of the two volunteers that do help with CSS editing to find this thread and help you. In the meanwhile you may want to read this post >

    Thanks a lot!

    Looking forward to receiving their help!

    I for one will be particularly impressed if anyone can tell you how to do this. If a theme doesn’t display the poster’s name, I don’t see how any amount of CSS can make it do so.

    But I have been amazed by the feats of CSS ninjas before…

    I agree with Andrew. You may wish to seek a refund from staff, as I do not think this is possible, even with the CSS upgrade. It does not add functionality to themes. I suggest you either switch to a theme with this functionality or have the additional author type their name in as a byline, like in a newspaper.

    WordPress.com staff replied to me and I was disappointed.

    WordPress.com simply “cannot provide any CSS support” as it states in the email.

    Changing the theme is simply not an option. I tried different themes all night long last night without sleep in seeking for the best theme.

    With so few themes available when compared to WordPress.org (though I don’t have the expertise to base my website on WordPress.org), I have found no theme that works better for my site than the current one.

    However, I was glad that WordPress.com will consider my suggestion to make the “Intrepidity” theme available for use.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/intrepidity

    That theme will be an awesome one for media like my site!

    Back on the author display, I still don’t know what to do other than manually adding the by-lines which is time-consuming.

    You can either do that or make each author’s name a tag or category. Those will both make the author’s name appear on the posts. If you simply want to be able to provide all posts by any author at once, just use the Author widget, which works whether or not the author’s name is displayed.

    Like I said, if you purchased the CSS upgrade in order to get this to work, I don’t think it will ever work and you are well advised to get your money back. Should one of the CSS ninjas appear with a solution, you can test in the free Preview and then purchase the upgrade once you’re sure it does what you want.

    With your current theme as it stands this is currently not possible even with the CSS upgrade. I like raincoaster’s suggestion of using either tags or categories to show the author automatically. If you do this then there is a method of generating a separate byline automatically, however it doesn’t work in Internet Explorer. Here’s the method anyway, at the moment it’s using your current categories to display some text.

    div.category-cathay-pacific .entry-content:before {content:'posted by someone';}
    div.category-uncategorized .entry-content:before {content:'posted by someone else';}
    div.category-boeing .entry-content:before {content:'posted by someone yet another person';}

    Clever, thanks for that.

    @halluke, that’s a very clever trick. It makes me rather uneasy, since the whole point of CSS is that it’s for style, the *content* being specified in HTML.

    That said, the content property somehow made it into CSS. See:
    http://www.w3schools.com/Css/pr_gen_content.asp

    The link makes it look as though the trick will work in IE 8 (and higher). I can’t bring myself to test that. To do so, I’d have to touch both a property I disapprove of and a browser I don’t like.

    I have used the technique suggested above by hallluke for some time (I use after rather than before) and I have also added avatars to the heading using something like this (which I think will work in K2-lite):

    div.category-bigdave .entry-head {
    background:#ffffff url('http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/8128687d95aa653ec863a8f6829b37f5?s=30&d=wavatar&r=G') top right no-repeat;
    }

    I only have to add a few lines of code for each new contributor.

    “Necessity is the mother of invention”.

    I know how you feel about using it Andrew. It does work but still doesn’t feel quite right. Obviously it won’t work for every single person who views the page and that would lead me to consider it a bad idea for something important like the post author. The misappropriation of the tag or category links is probably a better method considering the limitations of the theme. Saying that it is still an option and will give people with supporting browsers extra information. I just provide the code, the choice is yours either to run with or not!
