display category description

  My custom menu is made up of different categories so that all posts fall under a particular category and are available by clicking on that specific category on the menu bar. I want the category description to be displayed, when someone clicks on the category archive. How do I know if my theme supports this?

  Should I have used pages instead of categories to create my custom menu?
