Can we display a custom designed Error page to the user if they receive ERROR 404 FILE NOT FOUND Error on my site.

Currently I am using ‘The Ocean Mist Theme’ and if a user deliberately types something in address bar. The ERROR 404 FILE NOT FOUND Message is displayed but the entire page layout gets spoiled.

I have designed ‘Page Not Found’ new page. So how can i direct user to this page.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m fairly sure this isn’t possible with a free WordPress.com, and not even with any of the paid upgrades. It would mean changing the PHP code for the theme. Options :

    1. Don’t worry about it, 404 errors are fairly rare anyway, especially if all the links works properly on your site.

    2. Use a different theme with better 404 pages, or at least ones that you prefer.

    3. Go self-hosted, and either customize the 404 page yourself or employ a web developer to do it for you. WordPress.org describes how to do this here – https://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_an_Error_404_Page

    4. Some further possibilities are explored here, the widget suggestion by @rachelmcr may be of help – https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/customize-the-404-error-page-for-my-custom-domain

If you still have a question, then I’m contactable via this thread, or via my blog [redacted*] or our commercial site [redacted*]

  • Hi there,

There is no option to customize the text that appears on a 404 error page on WordPress.com, for each respective page is chosen by the original designer and hard-coded into the theme.

For more information on the different texts that come up with each theme, you can visit this post.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!
