Display error and attribution

  • Unknown's avatar

    I have two issues.

First, there is a huge gap between two of the posts (Sunday Painter and Rival) that I can’t figure out.

Second, this blog is a compilation of my late mother’s poetry, but every post is attributed to me.

So, how do I fix the display problem, and remove my name as the author.

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @topcat1953,

First, there is a huge gap between two of the posts (Sunday Painter and Rival) that I can’t figure out.

Looking at the site’s code, it looks like this is space reserved for widgets. I was able to add an empty paragraph block in Appearance → Widgets, which seems to have reduced the space.

Looking at your site, I see that you are using the Black-LetterHead theme, which has since been retired. Since retired themes are no longer maintained, they may run into some compatibility issues with the block editor. You might like to consider switching to a newer theme by going to Appearance → Themes.

Second, this blog is a compilation of my late mother’s poetry, but every post is attributed to me.

What you might want to consider is creating a new account that uses your mother’s name as the display name. You can then bulk edit the posts and use this account as the author.

I hope that helps and please reach out again if you have any further questions.

Thank you. I was thinking the same thing. My first thought was to try a different theme but I wanted you to see the problem first.

Creating a second account is something I have considered, but it’s so convenient to have them both under one account. For example, both blogs can’t be open at the same time in the same browser. Being able to switch from one to the other is so easy.

It would be useful if the second blog could somehow have a unique identity. The primary blog would be the login username, but the second blog could be sort of a sub-account with different attributions.

  • Having a separate account and granting access to an author doesn’t change your current workflow — you can still be logged into your account to publish posts, and attribute them as your mother.

Though if your other site doesn’t display your author name, you might just want to change your public display name: https://wordpress.com/me

    Would that work for you?

I’ve considered that, too, but I use my display name across the web not just on WordPress. It’s sort of like a trademark.

Ideally, I would start a family blog, migrate all of mom’s poetry to the new account and close the existing blog.

  • Hi @topcat1953

If you wish you can definitely create a second account. I see you asked a similar question in this other thread, so you can follow the same steps as I’ve given here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/family-blog-2/?view=all#post-3800791

Note: Anytime you are trying to create a second account, you must first sign out of your @topcat1953. It’s not possible to create a second account if you are logged in to WordPress.com already (under your usual account)

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

So I changed the theme, but I just don’t understand the Block Editor. I’m not tech savvy, and too old to learn. A lot of people wish that WordPress had just left it alone.

I understand that it’s useful for professional websites, but for the common blogger it’s just been a nightmare.

On the old template, I was able to access the Menu through Appearance. It’s no longer there. When I activate Menu through the Customize tab, it does show the Home tab on the blog but when I click on it, it goes to a page that says Home.

I want it to go back to the posts. When someone reads an older post, they should be able to click the Home tab and go back to the front. I have it set so that posts appear on the Home page, On the old theme, I would go to Appearance >>> Menu, to actually set that up.

    I’m stumped.

  • Hi there,

I can see you are using the Quadrat theme, which is one of our “Full Site Editing” themes. This is a new way of customizing sites that are made entirely of blocks, and we talk about how to work with this new tool in more detail here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/full-site-editing/

It is not possible to convert the theme you are using now, but if you prefer the classic experience you can have that by activating any of the classic themes shown here: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/classic-theme/

If you switch to one of the themes listed above that will have a customizer interface like you are used do.

In addition if you prefer the classic editor to the newer block editor (when editing individual pages and blog posts) you can use that at any time. Instructions for how to access the classic editor are found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/classic-editor-guide/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

I activated a classic theme but when I click on the Home tab it takes me to a blank page that is titled Home. I want the Home tab to navigate back to the front page where the posts are.

  • Hi,

Take a look now. Home should point to the correct place.
