Display Excerpt Instead of Post on WP-Hosted Blog

As you can see on my blog, it’s quite long and for 10 posts it’s pretty hard to read all of it and can have a bad effect on readers endlessly scrolling.
My solution to this was to use featured image with excerpt. I am able to feature images with ease, however I wanted to ask how I’d be able to display excerpt on front page then a “read on…” tag. The reason why I don’t use the more tag and want to use an excerpt is that for some posts I have multiple images on top of the post, because of this I’d like to feature and have only one image and use excerpt as the first paragraph.
I’ve looked around and I think it’s only possible to do this on own hosted, however I’d like to ask if this was possible nevertheless.
Furthermore if it’s not and you have a better Idea to how I could better improve the size for better reading etc, I’d like to hear. Ps. is the more tag good for seo?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hey,

Easiest question first: The more tag is SEO neutral. It doesn’t help or hurt SEO.

With the theme you’re using, you’re right, using Twenty Twelve on self-hosted and tweaking it (with a child theme) would be the way to go.

If changing themes would be an option, the Oxygen theme does support using the manual excerpts feature to generate the text seen on the home page. It doesn’t render a “read more” link, so that would have to be done manually.

If you have any questions or need anything else, please let me know.

Can I ask because I had so many written stuff on my home page, when I add the more tag after the first paragraph, will that change the way my blog is indexed and will it show up different on search engine? Could it mean that my blog may get less views?

  • Since your blog already points to the individual post pages as the “canonical” source of that material, it should not have a negative impact on SEO. Since folks have to click-through to read the whole post, it may actually increase your views (while visitors shouldn’t be impacted).

    Hope that helps!

I’v actually found an issue with the theme itself, it seems to be displaying a strange white/red dot on the left side of the blog. (screenshots to be posted)

  • Hi again,

Honestly, I can’t see it in Chrome or Firefox on my Mac, either with the cinema display or retina screen. Do you notice it on different browsers?

I just tried IE 10 and that doesn’t seem to be showing the little red dead pixel like icon.
However I removed the background temporarily and it seems to be there. If you try zooming in and out of the page, preferably out you may be able to spot it on the left.

Also can I ask if the images uploaded on my blog are somehow being compressed or something, because I’ve just noticed from my laptop that the background image on my blog has a some kind of black lining to it, however on my desktop there doesn’t seem to be this option. I’ve never noticed this before except now. Could this be due to compression, or browser problem (Chrome). I just tried IE and that looks fine.

  • That’s interesting regarding the dot. I still can’t reproduce it, but will keep looking.

Regarding compression, we do on some image files that are processed through the site. For example, the image in one of your recent posts, the URL is http://dailyanimeart.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/atlas-flame-is-the-eternal-flame.png?w=625&h=870 . We processed that one on the fly to the width/height specified and will compress it along the way.

The black lining shouldn’t be caused by our compression, though I’m not seeing it on Chrome on a Mac. I know Chrome is working on some compression (believe on the current iOS and upcoming Android versions) and some Internet providers, especially satellite providers, do as well.
