Display only Parent Categories?

Is it possible to only display Parent Categories in the sidebar?
Here’s the situation . . . the blog I manage is for a quarterly publication. Each issue has a number of different categories, World, Features, Opinion. Right now the sidebar is displaying Fall 2007 World, Fall 2007 Features, Fall 2007 Opinion, Summer 2007 World and so on.
Is it possible for the sidebar to only display Fall 2007 and Fall Summer 2007, but when a user selects one, it expands to display the full range of sub-categories?

I don’t know whether there is or not, but go to presentation > widgets and click on the icon at the right end of the category widget and see if “show hierarchy” is selected. If it is, deselect it, if not, try selecting it and see what difference it makes. Perhaps it will indent the subcategories under the main categories, which would be better than nothing. Also, don’t forget to click “save changes” after making the changes to the widget settings.

Do you have a category called “fall 2007” and “summer 2007”? Those should be the parent categories. Then you would have children of fall 2007 called “fall 2007 opinion”, fall 2007 features”, etc. Similar for summer, etc.
