Display pdf as thumbnail

When inserting a pdf (as media) into a page the pdf only displays as a text link. How do I get to display as a thumbnail of the pdf on the wordpress page?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just to make sure I understand correctly, you’re trying to embed the PDF so that the reader could actually read the PDF within the page without going elsewhere. Correct? If so, I would recommend using a service like Scribd:

Alternatively, you could embed it as a Google Doc instead of a PDF:

Hi.
I don’t think this is quite what I’m trying to achieve. What I want is to insert a THUMBNAIL image of the front cover of a pdf file so that visitors to my wordpress website will see the thumbnail of the pdf on the page AND then click on the thumbnail to open the full pdf document. I had assumed that wordpress was user friendly enough to make this happen automatically when you added a pdf file through the ‘Add media’ function on the wordpress page but this does not seem to be the case. Any suggestions?

Hi!
When you insert a PDF into a page, we’ll display the PDF as a link to the Media File by default. Here’s an example screenshot:
When clicked, that link should open up the PDF file in the browser for the user to view. In order to do this, just make sure that the Attachment Display Settings are set to Media File as shown here:
If you’re trying to display a PDF file icon, you would need to upload that icon first; WordPress.com will not automatically create it.
For example, you could download this icon as a PNG:
http://findicons.com/icon/173560/filetype_pdf?id=173616
Then, upload that item to your Media Library and add it into a post/page. To link that to the PDF media file, navigate to your Media Library here:
https://wordmower.wordpress.com/wp-admin/upload.php
Click on the Media File and copy the URL shown here:
When adding the PNG image to your post, specify a custom URL and paste in the PDF file URL as shown here:
If by “thumbnail of the PDF on the page” you mean an actual screenshot of the front page of the PDF, you would need to manually create that screenshot. Then, upload that JPG image to your media library and repeat the steps above with the PDF screenshot instead of the PDF icon.

Thanks Jeremy
what I need is the second option i.e. display pdf file icon on my page and then link from it to the full pdf doc.
Through lots of fiddly trial and error I had worked out how to do this (before reading your reply) i.e save cover page of my pdf as jpeg/png then resize it to something similar to a thumbnail then upload that thumbnail to wordpress media library then insert thumbnail image into my page then link thumbnail to full pdf doc via custom url. It works ok but just thought that a platform as ubiquitous as WordPress would have made life easy for its users by including some code in all its themed templates that automates the whole process rather than expecting users to go through this five step process that also requires some basic knowledge of image editing. If this can’t happen then at least have a very easy to find, plain and clear instruction in the help section for the media library that tells luddites like myself in everyday language that pdf files don’t behave like image files and that they won’t automatically generate an image of the pdf when uploaded to the media library and that you have to manually create the image icon yourself and then link from it to the full pdf. Maybe it’s just me but I think help/support documentation for digital applications in general have a long way to go in terms of the way they are written and laid out i.e. I don’t think they’re sufficiently intuitive to be of great use to the complete digital novice. These comments are meant as constructive feedback and not meant to reflect on the level of assistance you have provided which has been good. Thanks for following up.
