Display Portfolio Between Blocks?
-
Hello,
I’d like to display my portfolio content between blocks on my homepage. As it stands, the portfolio content currently displays at the very bottom, beneath all the blocks I’ve added on my homepage. I can’t for the life of me find any layout options to adjust this. Thanks for your time!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey Hey,
Have you tried using a “cover” block? It’s a type of header/background block that can be repeated between each element on a page. You can learn more about cover blocks here:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/cover-block/
If you already tried this or if it’s not applicable to how you want your portfolio content to be presented, let us know and there are other options!

Not quite, or I don’t understand how those apply.
It is possible to attach a screengrab here? I want to show you how right now my page has the dynamic array of portfolio entries at the bottom, and I want to reposition it, specifically above the block that currently contains an Instagram feed.
Thanks for your help and for your time.

Hi @jsoncbrown
The theme you are using (Argent) is an older one released before we had a “block editor,” so some theme features are hard-coded into the page templates. In this case, the location of the portfolio display is baked into the Front Page template and cannot be modified in the same way as you would with blocks.
You may want to consider instead using a Default page template (instead of the Front Page template) to turn off the default portfolio section, and instead add the Blog Posts block to your existing layout, which can be used to show portfolio items.
This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to set this up to look similar to how Agent displays portfolio projects.
You can view it at this link: https://d.pr/v/OUo7Qx
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Wow, this was very helpful, thank you!
I do have another question, now. I like the way each portfolio item looks like a square in the editor, but when you pop open the preview they grow into taller rectangles. Is there a way to define and preserve a particular set of dimensions?
This again, this revelation is huge!

Hi Jason,
This is happening because the Argent theme was introduced before the Block Editor. So, this is how your projects are displayed when using the Blog Posts block.
If you want to replicate the appearance of the projects as seen on the Argent demo, you’ll have to use the default front page template explicitly designed for that theme. You can find more info on how to configure that here:

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. Before I get too deep into this suggestion I want to check: are you asking me to undo the advice from the prior commenter (jerrysarcastic)? That clearly solved another problem I was having and I fear I’ll never catch up with myself if I keeping stepping forwards then backwards.
Thanks for your time and I apologize if I’m simply misunderstanding what you’re suggesting here.

Hey Jason,
Just to check – I am currently seeing them as squares on your site. Were you able to get them set up to your liking?
-
Hi, thanks for checking in. I got the boxes sized as I like, but at the expense of reverting myself back to the problem I originally posted about: being unable to arrange my portfolio content between blocks.
Thanks again,
Jason

Unfortunately there is not much we can do to assist with that. Since this theme predates the block editor (and uses a hard-coded Front Page template) the only way to change the order would be to hire a web designer to author the custom code you would need.

I would not say they are undoing my advice, and are correct that if you like the appearance of the default theme you would need to set it up as directed in the theme setup documentation here: https://wordpress.com/theme/argent
Of course to do that would mean that you would not be able to use a custom layout, which seems to be your wish here. Sadly this is an either/or proposition. To have a custom homepage layout will mean that it’s not possible to use the built-in portfolio style that this classic theme was built around.
Let us know if you need further assistance or if you have any questions.

This issue and discussion makes me wonder: is there any way to know what themes predate the block editor prior to applying them? I might well want to try different themes and if I could know that it help me with picking one.
Thanks again for all your help.

You can view all the themes that are fully compatible with the Block Editor here:
