Display problem | Color background of a group of blocks

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello,

I use Gutenberg and I have a difficulty with its use. (I also use the Radcliffe 2 theme – for all intents and purposes.)

When I group blocks of paragraphs and apply a colored background to them, the whole thing is displayed correctly on the text modification page but not on the resulting page on the site.

We see it on this article, for example. The first block “Carbon reservoirs and sinks” should be displayed with the same indentation as the “Source” last block below, i.e. not with the normal indentation of the text.

The difference between the two blocks is that the first is a group of paragraphs while the second is composed of only one paragraph.

Do you have any idea how to solve this display problem?

I thank you in advance for your help.

  • Good Morning –

Thanks for writing to us. I want to make sure that I understand the problem completely before I try to replicate it on my end.

The color background only works when there are multiple paragraphs written in the given block?

    Thanks for your answer.

The background is colored on both cases. What doesn’t work is the indentation of the text inside the colored block.

When they are multiple paragraph blocks grouped together, the text indentation is wrong: the text is too close from the margin. As the group is colored, the text should be indented, as it is when they are only one colored paragraph block.

I hope it’s clear. Compare the “Source” block in my article (one colored paragraph block) and the other blocks (groups of paragraph blocks), you’ll see the lack of indentation.

  • Thank you. I will report back with an update and/or any findings.

  • I’ve figured it out :)

With the first one the background is on a group block. The last one is just a paragraph block, this is why it looks different.

The paragraph block has different styling. There’s not a way to change that from your side.

For consistency, with your free plan, you can place the bottom paragraph block inside a group and assign the background to the group level. That should make the indentation line up and it will look the same on all of your blocks with backgrounds enabled.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Can we classify this as a bug? It could be nice to have an indentation while using colored groups.

I noticed another issue with groups: you cannot use bullet point or numbered lists in a paragraph that’s inside a group. It’s also quite inconvenient.

  • By that, are you referring to the List Block?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes. But saying that, I realize that I made a mistake. You can put a list block in a group but you cannot change the text color of a list block that is inside a group.

  • There is no option to change the color of the List Block in general, it is or isn’t inside of a Group.

It’s not a bug but definitely a possible enhancement. In fact, it looks like a similar issue has been already reported here. You can add a comment to that one with your suggestions.

Let me know if you have any more questions regarding that.

Thanks for your answer. I’ll wait for this enhancement!
