Displaying hundreds of images on one page

We want to display several hundred photos of an event. I don’t mind if we use up lots of our storage space, but want the page(s) to load quickly. I’ve read the support pages on images and galleries but am still unsure on the best options for showing quite so many images in one place.

I’d welcome advice – would it work to have say a dozen thumbnail / mosaic galleries on one page, with each photo linked to a full-size image? Or would it be better if we set up sub-pages and linked to them through a title or image?

It would be great to understand our options to produce something that looks good on first sight but also allows people to see chosen images at higher resolution.

With thanks for guidance / ideas on this.

Tiled Galleries can be linked to either the Photo Carousel (default), attachment pages, or the media file itself. You can’t link images inserted with a Gallery to other Pages or Posts.

If you are talking hundreds of photos, your page load time will degrade. Looking at your site I’d suggest Inserting multiple Galleries of, say 25 images each, in your post-Event images page, but use Pagination between the Galleries http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/nextpage/

Depending on how you are grouping your images, you could also insert single images on your Event page as sort of an index which you could link to Child pages.

A word about optimization: Do you want people to be able to download high-res images for printing or for viewing only? If the first, you will indeed fill up your free 3GB of storage quickly. If the second, I strongly suggest optimizing, resizing and uploading images no larger than 1600 pixels on the long side. Use a image editing program to do so. There are lots of free programs available.

many thanks for taking the time to look at our site and offer bespoke advice. The pagination option is perfect – I did not know that existed!

I will see how big the files are when they arrive and then judge whether to resize them before loading.
