Displaying posts in a category
-
When a user clicks on a category, the relevant posts show up in entirety.
Can I make it so that only the title of the post and the excerpt shows up in the listing that is displayed? People could scan the shorter list much more quickly to find something they are looking for.
That way, the category (or tagged) listing could serve as a kind of contents or menu for the blog site. It would be much more useful than the archives listing for example.
Thanks for any help you can provide – Sharon/Vinny

I’m interested in this as well. Although I believe it depends on which theme you are using :-/.
See the Origin theme, for example:

Yes, it’s theme dependent, but there are some certain things you can do with Custom CSS to hide details. If you use the More tag in posts (redundant on the Origins theme, I know) then only the excerpt should show.

Raincoaster, I’d need a little more help than this, as I’m not code literate. Would it work with MY theme (Koi)? If so what is the code and where would i put it? I found a “customize” link under themes in “Appearance” and I see CSS there, but I would have to buy it. It looks like way too much for me to handle. Can I buy just this one change? Couldn’t somebody just fix Koi so it does this one useful thing?

@vinnygrette Using the More tag http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/ in your posts will affect the front page, archive, category pages and possibly search pages on your site.
Your posts are quite long and you have a lot going on the front page in any event. I’d recommend giving your readers an “appiteaser” instead.

Wow, the more tag works! And thanks so much for telling me where it is. This is easy and doesn’t cost me a cent :). And I don’t have to insert a code anywhere, it does it for me :).
I had been writing “excerpts” for my posts but sometimes I’ve forgotten. They are in the form of appeteasers, as you’ve suggested. They were being used when search results were presented. But until you told me about the more tag, the excerpt wasn’t being used when a “category” or “tag” was selected.
Problem solved. Thanks once again to the support community for your rapid and helpful responses. Yay WordPress!!!
