Dispute with a blogger

  • Unknown's avatar

I have got involved in a dispute with a blogger and I need help. I have been accused of changing the text in a post of mine. As I knew I hadn’t, I simply went to my admin page, took about 4 screenshots of the page on the days concerned and was sure that this would prove that I hadn’t updated my post. But then I was accused of a second deceit. I was supposed to have changed the “timestamp.”
Well, I wrote to WordPress to ask if they could prove that I hadn’t updated my post, but they don’t get involved in disputes like this they said. So I thought I would come here and ask if there is some way to get hold of a cached version to prove that I did not change my post?
I will be grateful for any advice.

to my (limited) knowledge, i don’t believe you can prove it. my suggestion is to ignore the person as s/he sounds like a flamer and seems to be looking for trouble.

did you try to query popular search engines with the following string: site:nitawriter.wordpress.com KeywordContainedInThePostInQuestion

cached snapshot usually contains a timestamp in the header stating when it was tetrieved by the SE.

Wow, that worked Options! :) What I did was simply type in a whole sentence from my post in google search and then my post came up at the first option. I clicked on a word at the bottom which said ‘Cached’ and there it came. My post just a few hours after it was published, maybe even earlier as no one had commented as yet!!! Wow.
Can’t thank you enough because its never nice to be accused of deceit and that too for no reason at all!
Thanks Sulz for your response too. Yes, me too thinks that this guy was looking for trouble. Thanks for your response.

I am giving this link of my cached page for this person who is harassing me:

    http://72.14.235.104/search?q=cache:d08gAML9xPAJ:nitawriter.wordpress.com/2007/07/05/indians-in-terror-plot-in-uk/+educated+people+get+sucked+into+a+terror+network&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1

He is continuing to harass me by now alleging that I have sent him ‘private’ emails. The only emails I sent him were those with a copy to WordPress support and one with a link to this page. I thought it was the right thing to do.

Anyway, I hope its over now. I cannot do more than show a cached version of my page.

    you’re welcome.

hmm, that’s exactly the article I thought of when I took a look at your blag.

    PS
never mind the bollocks… here’s sex pistols!

@nitawriter: More generally the question is *how to deal with a nutter / harrasser / stalker* ? That is a difficult question and I do not want to understate the issues. But you certainly do not have any obligation to enter into dialogue with the offender of any kind. You certainly do not have to justify your writings on your own blog. If you do / do not edit posts – so what?

I’ve been blogging for some years now and i keep my older blog yet. I’ve made some “fans” along the way and every now and then they come back just to make themselves noticed or maybe to someone notice they are alive.

The advise i can give is:
    a) ignore when the subject is serious as yours is – make a post with the screen capture and the cached link just to clear the air with the other readers, but never refer to him directly. don’t give him an important place – just talk about “someone”.

    b) when the subject isn’t really that serious, but a troll tries to show off, just have fun with the lame guy who is just after some kicks the only way he/she can

    c) shame him/her with some act when you caught him/her in the act – i did find some years ago that one of the trolls was a regular and well considered blogger and writer wannabee that wanted most of all to keep is name clean. Once he forgot to change his IP address and posted immediately after the troll. I made a serious post with screen captures and he never walked in again.

and after all this: just ignore ignore ignore.
it’s the best remedy that will make them go away. they just want/need attention.

Ignore – ignore – ignore trolls. Never engage a troll. Never feed one. Never try to one up them or put them down. They are looking for attention and if you give it to them — they “win”. Shun trolls and go on about your business.

BTW your article is excellent. I’m adding your blog to the blogroll on one of my blogs.

i couldn’t help, but i’m glad options could. hope you’ll solve this problem of the unwanted guest in your home. =)

There is absolutely no proof you can give that will satisfy someone who is irrational and/or out to get you. So do not even try.

You can easily ban them by putting their information in the bottom box on Dashboard — > Options –> Discussion — > Comment Blacklist. It’s a harsh step to take, but most people like this are well used to being banned, and it doesn’t sound like this person is contributing positively to the community on your blog, so that is what I’d suggest. I, personally, would attack back, but that’s my way, not yours.

I am quite overwhelmed with the responses to this. Its wonderful to have this warm WordPress community and I have no never been so glad as I am now for having joined WordPress.
Thanks Timethief for adding me to your blogroll. :)
I am going to take the advice given here. And yes, that flamer will go into my blacklist.
    Thanks everyone. :)

If wordpress or support forum renders it appropriate, I would be more than ready to remove the post.
    Thanks :)

  • Unknown's avatar

i don’t think wordpress will ask you to remove the post because it’s your blog. so it’s your call, that. only arguments in the forums will be removed. =)
