disrupted post spacing
-
This is similar to a problem that I posted a week or so ago about extra white space between two posts, but now there’s extra space between a couple of my posts. (I had to re-upload several photos and probably disrupted the spacing when I inserted them into posts.)
Forum experts said that code was causing the problem but it resolved itself without my having to do anything. So now would someone please look at my blog and walk me through how to remove the extra space between, for example, the “Mokuba tape” and “Gridlock scarf” posts, even though I am completely ignorant of html? TIA

Using firebug, I’m seeing a bunch of <p/> after the last paragraph, which isn’t valid code. It should be
</p>I’m not sure how they got in there and why they aren’t showing under the last paragraph.
I’m also seeing a lot (bunches) of <strong/> in your posts, and again that isn’t valid code. It should be
</strong>There is a bunch of really wacky stuff in there.
-
I can see the problem. There are extra line breaks after your email address. In your editor, switch to HTML view. In the In the Gridlock scarf post the code for your email address should looks like this
<p style="text-align:left;"><strong><strong>For details, please see the ”How to order stuff” page, or e-mail me: </strong><a href="mailto:(email visible only to moderators and staff)"><span style="color:#666666;"><strong>(email visible only to moderators and staff)</strong></span></a><strong>.</strong></strong></p>
Change it into
<p style="text-align:left;"><strong>For details, please see the ”How to order stuff” page, or e-mail me: <a href="mailto:(email visible only to moderators and staff)"><span style="color:#666666;">(email visible only to moderators and staff)</span></a>.</strong></p>
Then delete everything after that. -
You need to look at the W3C validator report as it is showing a bunch of open tags. The lines in the report that you should look at are the ones that say “end tag for “strong” omitted, but OMITTAG NO was specified.”
-
Oops I forgot the link to the validator report.
-
Thanks for the help. I will print these pages out and make some of the changes that you suggest if I have the guts. Or I will leave the spaces (and the wacky code) alone, if they aren’t making trouble.
Is my habit of moving text around within posts using “control C,” “control V” causing problems? Cut and paste would be better but I don’t see that option.
-
Cut and paste shouldn’t be a problem. I use it as well when editing and have never had an issue. The missing “strong” tags (bold) will, until those posts are pushed off of the front page, mean that all of your posts (below those with the missing strong tags) on the front page will have bold text. Eventually those post will be pushed off of the main page though.

I see what thesacredpath is referring to in the W3C validator report, and there are two open tags in line 114, but how do I find line 114? Sorry for all the basic questions, but this is all new to me. TIA

I think the validator report must seem rather daunting, and I think you should start to come to terms with html, so I suggest you go to your html post editor and check the following (keep in mind that each “strong”, “div” or “p” within brackets should have its slashed partner somewhere along the way, and with something meaningful in between):
At the end of the post you’ve got these four lines
<p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p style="text-align:left;"> </p>That’s the extra space you complained about: delete the whole bunch. The code means four lines each comprising a blank space, the fourth with the additional (useless) command to align it to the left.
At the beginning you’ve got three lines that go
<div><strong></strong></div>
Delete them. What they say is: make the enclosed text bold; but there’s absolutely nothing enclosed.(You’ve got similar useless pieces of code in your previous post, too – boblets had pointed them out.)
And you’ve got a lot of useless slashed and unslashed “strong” tags (frankly, I don’t know how you managed to do that) in this as well as previous posts. If all you wanted was to have all the text bold, you should only have one “strong” before the text and one “/strong” after it. You can delete all these tags (along with their brackets, of course), then switch to the visual editor, select all the text and click the bold icon.
You can also copy the correct code for your “For details” etc. as thesacredpath gave it above and keep it somewhere for future use. (Note that it includes the command for bold text, so if you make a new post and you want it all in bold, you will only have to select the rest of the text, not the “For details” again.)
By the way, in your “Eyelash swatch” post you’ve got this
</p><p>
creating a paragraph break between “Firefly” and “yarn”. Delete! -
Hi again, Panaghiotisadam, No idea where all the weird code is coming from b/c I have NEVER used the html editor, I’m strictly visual. Didn’t even know until yesterday that “strong” means “bold.”
Thank you all for your time and expertise. I will try my best to follow your suggestions to fix the problems and have put the html tutorial on my to do list. Maybe someday I’ll even know what that “Allowed markup: ….” stuff means.
-
Of course you haven’t used the html editor: those tags probably come from bad manoeuvring (did I spell that correctly?) within your visual editor and/or pasting from Word.
If and when you’ll need to post something more complicated, you’ll see that some html is useful. Google for “html codes” and you’ll find several sites that explain what all those creatures are supposed to do.
-
Please, please, look at my site now and tell me whether I have helped or harmed.
I fiddled with the html on the Mokuba post and the Gridlock scarf ONLY and they still look ok, but all the other posts on that page (Marbella, Linen, Carousel, Eyelash swatch) suddenly have diferent fonts. Marbella’s text looks fine in the editing box but not on the site. Plus the bottom box on that same page is misaligned.
What the heck is going on?
-
i think you must go to the Gridlock post and remove this:
<div class="mceTemp mceIEcenter"> <div class="mceTemp mceIEcenter"> <div class="mceTemp mceIEcenter"> <div class="mceTemp mceIEcenter"><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <div><strong></strong></div> <p><strong></strong></p> <div><strong><strong></strong></strong></div> <p><strong><strong></p>I really cannot understand what you are doing that produces all this. Perhaps it has to do with your browser – in which case I can’t help, I’m afraid: I’m not using either Internet Explorer or a PC.
-
I thought that all I did was to delete some of the code that you suggested yesterday and added nothing to any post. I will delete that whole mess and hope that it restores the default font on the rest of the posts.
I have been using IE and the same computer since June so am upset and bewildered and frustrated by all this craziness but I have Firefox and will switch browsers now and hope that it helps.
-
This is exactly the same issue as last time, buyathread, so maybe we should find out what you do when you post something.. You could get all those silly tags if you copy and paste from somewhere – be it Word, OpenOffice, the web or things like that. Please tell us exactly what you do, what you write in, and how you publish.
-
Hi, Boblets, I type every single post from scratch since the last warning about Word, and don’t cut/copy/paste from anywhere. I am writing a new post right now and but type and use the visual editor. Hope it works. If not, I’ll post later.
Re Panaghiotisadam’s last reply, I deleted all of the following from the Gridlock post and everything looks fine now including all the fonts. Using Firefox instead of IE and will continue to do that in case that is at the bottom of this. Thank you.

One thing, maybe.. when you use the visual editor, and format text – do you do a lot of returns, perhaps, and – making it bold, for example – “highlight” empty space?
Just trying to figure it out..
A lot of the silly tags you have had, have been , indicating something like that.. and paragraphs, which would suggest returns… -
-
Boblets, don’t know what you mean by “returns” so I don’t know whether I do a lot of them or not.
Since I am writing a new post now I will be especially careful to not highlight empty space (not sure that’s something I’ve done but I will be aware of it now), or do a lot of returns, once I know what they are.
Can you at the unpublished draft of my new post?
