disrupted post spacing

Uh, sorry, but it’s been a rough day. I meant to ask if you can look at the draft of the post I’m writing now, even though it’s still unpublished.

I may do a lot of carriage returns b/c in this draft for example, there is one solid block of text below the image, when it should be three different paragraphs, and I have tried a lot of different ways to get space between the paragraphs, without success.

Weird thing is that there were no problems with the paragraphs above the image and I didn’t do anything different.

Fyi I’m using Firefox now and won’t use IE for my blog anymore.

No, I cannot access your drafts – but I’m sure it will work out. The odd div’s I cannot explain, but the strong’s and the p’s ..would be fun if we pinned it. If you note how you write and publish, I’m sure there is an explanation.

OK, my new post is just about done so I will publish it and would really appreciate it if you would take a look at the innards, if you wouldn’t mind. It would be great if we pinned it and I will do anything that I can to help that happen.

Btw, I’ve been noticing that I don’t highlight blank space.

  • Unknown's avatar

    :-D that’s good
    – sure – let us know when you have published.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s published now so please check it out whenever you can.

The odd-looking light and dark chunks of text below the image would be separate paragraphs in a perfect world : )

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah, things are getting better: fewer problems this time! All is well up to and including the picture. Then it gets wrong, with unnecessary divs and left-align commands as well as that “mceIEcenter” thing.

What you should have done in the visual editor is simply type “This design …”, hit return for a paragraph break, type “I started the project …”, hit return, type “I hope that …”, then select those three paragraphs and click the bold icon. That’s all it would have taken – no need for anything else.

Now please tell us what you actually did, because your posts have become something of a scientific curiosity (I guess boblets shares the same feeling)!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sorry but I’m not imaginative enough to do any more than exactly what you said but since I did that post this morning when I was still using IE, can I just delete the whole darned thing and start over?

I just finished a new page that I had no trouble with so I’ll I publish it and maybe you and boblets could compare scientific curiosities : )

  • Unknown's avatar

P.S. my new page is called “First Steps,” it’s a child page of “About,” and can be accessed from the bottom bar. Sorry if that’s stating the obvious.

  • Unknown's avatar

Rejoice! The code for that page is practically flawless!

(The only quibble is a “strong” command for the “I” alone of the “In 1963 …” – perhaps you accidentally missed the “I” when selecting the text to make it bold, then came back and corrected it?)

So if you wrote the page via Firefox, you finally know what to avoid from now on…

  • Unknown's avatar

    All hail boblets & panaghiotisadam!

You are so right on about the code glitch that it is uncanny. Yes, I missed highlighting the “I” and went back.

This has been a long and stressful — but ultimately satisfying — day so tomorrow I will delete this morning’s post, re-do it via Firefox, and have it vetted. I would be delighted to turn the “scientific curiosity” title over to someone else : )

  • Unknown's avatar

Well I think you proved that the title should be awarded to IE, not to you! Is it IE 6 or 7?

  • Unknown's avatar

It took a while to find but we have IE 6.0.2900.2180.XPSP_SP2_GDR.050301-1519. I hope that helps. Somehow I knew that MS was to blame.

Thanks very much. It’s been amazing.

Brilliant! YES; this is a bit of a scientific curiosity. And though I understand your frustration, buyathread, I actually think it is fun to figure out.
My good colleague and the future partner in my firm, panaghiwhatshisnameagain, delights in this sort of thing. It is not rocket science, and setting teeth into a little problem is delightful..
Sorry for you if you find that weird, buyathread.
    :-)

I recently encountered similar problems with unwanted <div> added to my post bordering on excessive. That was most prone in the following post where I was shocked to discover so many open and close <div> tags at each paragraph that I had applied text Justify. (I use IE6 when I write new posts and switch to Firefox when I need to edit widgets).

    http://shimworld.wordpress.com/2008/07/23/nokia-e71-its-everything-and-more/

I had to go into the HTML editor to remove the weird <div class=> entries that appeared everywhere. The weirdest one was where the blockquote “Dear Mr Shim,” that had an open and close <div> tag to this separate from the rest of the quote .. as a result it had a different font type and size to the body.

I would have to see if the unnecessary div tagging is a result of using IE6. Also when inserting images into posts using IE6, unchecking the image link in the uploader has no effect and I always have to highlight the image once inserted into post and manually click on the unlink button on the toolbar!
