  The widgets and sidebars set up over a year ago have disappeared.
  What happened? how to get them back?

  Did you recently change to a different theme? If so, then the widgets may be in the inactive widgets area, below the available widgets. Just drag and drop them to the sidebar area at your widgets page: https://debbiefowlerblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php.
