diversity of prices for domain
-
Why is there such a diversity of prices for a domain name? The recommended name is $45.00 per year and the best alternative is $18.00 per year. There are also many others at varying prices. Are there advantages to one over another?
I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

I believe you may be referring to the different prices depending on TLDs: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
Those prices are set by the owner of the particular TLD, so we don’t have much say (beyond a small cut for profit to keep everything here running) in what the prices are.
Overall, I recommend picking the domain you like the best.

So any one of the domain names are just as versatile as any other in spite of the difference in price? If I were to choose the “best alternative” at $18.00 per year it would be just a versatile and have the same features as the “recommended” at $45.00 per year?

Yes. Domain names should reflect your site and it doesn’t matter what name you choose – the features you’ll get here at WordPress.com would be the same regardless.
Hope that clarifies things.
