Dividing a long existing post into pages
-
I am a new user of WordPress. I have a blog devoted to discussion of oriental rugs and textiles. http://rjohnhowe.wordpress.com/ To date I have made four posts each with a number of images. I would like to break that post up into several pages and have those pages visible to visitors in the right sidebar (I do have an introductory “about” page already in this sidebar. How do I break this long post into the desired pages? More is the “page” feature the appropriate one for doing what I want to do? It seems to me that WordPress “pages” are different from commonsensical ones.
Thanks,
R. John Howe

You can “paginate” posts or pages by placing
<!--nextpage-->in the post or page where you want it split up. You can enter this as many times as needed. At the bottom of the post or page it will automatically display links to move back and forward through the different “pages” of that particular post or page.Does that make sense? It sure sounds confusing!

mtdewvirus Moderator –
Thanks. Does the second message mean I need to place this item of code on the page marked “Code?” I’m not familiar with the expression “Code View.” Is there something with this explicit label?
Thanks, again,
John

I copied the item of code you provided, went into the “edit” mode for this long post, pressed the “code” tab, pasted in the “page code” at the appropriate place, saved in the continuing to edit option. I did this four times, hoping to make the four page divisions I currently want.
It seems to have had no effect. I’m doing something wrong.
Thanks,
John

Well, the only page I see in your blog is the “about” page. The nextpage tag works only on pages, if you want to split a post you’ll have to use the more tag.
If you want to create a page and divide it into two or more pages you’ll have to:
1. select and copy your content from the post,
2. create a new page,
3. insert a title for the page,
4. paste the content in this new page,
5. Insert a nextpage tag where you want a break (you can use as many as you like) as explained by mtdewvirus,
6. saveThe result will be a page showing only the first part of your text and a list of numbers at the bottom. These numbers are links to the next section(s) of the page. The page will be linked from your sidebar, just like your “about” page.
It works with your theme (Black Letterhead)If you are satisfied with the result, you can delete the original post.
