DNS CNAME record

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear sir/ madam,

My email provider has asked me to make a request of WordPress with respect to my domain http://www.pisoria.com, as below:

“Create a CNAME record for Exchange 2013 mailboxes
Simply contact your domain administrator and request the following addition to your domains DNS CNAME record.
    Host Name
    Points to
    autodiscover.<domainname>
    autodiscover.1.exchange2013.livemail.co.uk
For example if your domain name is ralphsdomainname.com your domain provider can create a CNAME record for autodiscover.ralphsdomainname.com to point to autodiscover.1.exchange2013.livemail.co.uk .”

I am not sure how to do this – is it an action that I need to take, or something that WordPress would need to update on my behalf?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I have added the CNAME record as requested. It may take a couple days for this to fully propagate.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank-you so much for your help.

This has worked perfectly to resolve the issues I was having with me email.

Could you please also update the CNAME records for my other sites in the same way?

    These are:
    5dproperty.com
    vemosconsulting.wordpress.com

    Many thanks,

    Alex

What are the CNAME records that you need added?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I think just the same as before…

“Create a CNAME record for Exchange 2013 mailboxes
Simply contact your domain administrator and request the following addition to your domains DNS CNAME record.
    Host Name
    Points to
    autodiscover.<domainname>
    autodiscover.1.exchange2013.livemail.co.uk
For example if your domain name is ralphsdomainname.com your domain provider can create a CNAME record for autodiscover.ralphsdomainname.com to point to autodiscover.1.exchange2013.livemail.co.uk .”

    But using the domain names…
    vemos-consulting.com
    5dproperty.com

Many thanks again for your help.

I’ve added it to: vemos-consulting.com, but I couldn’t add it to 5dproperty.com. The domain: 5dproperty.com does not have its nameservers set to us so adding the CNAME would not make a difference. Please change the nameservers to us, and then I can add it for you.

Hi – since your last change to the CNAME for vemos-consulting my email has stopped working correctly.
    I need this urgently.

Please could you reverse the change that you made to vemos-consulting as soon as possible.

    Many thanks.

    Thanks.

I got into a bit of a tangle there!

I will check with Fasthosts to verify what the CNAME records should be for vemos-consulting.com. It seems they may need to be different than for pisoria.com.

I am afraid that my knowledge in this area is really limted :(

Yes, please get the correct records before adding them to a domain.

    Hi,

I received the following message from my provider regarding the CNAME records:

“I am afraid the CNAME record for vemos-consulting.com is different from your pisoria.com as this is on professional mailbox. You need to add an A record with autodiscover as the hostname and points it to 213.171.216.58. Once done, please create a CNAME record with autodiscover as the hostname and points it to autodiscover.pisoria.com. You may refer to the link below for reference.”

Would you please be able to action that for me for vemos-consulting?

    Thank-you

Before I do anything, can you confirm that I’m adding both of these records to vemos-consulting.com?

I just want to make sure I’m understanding their message correctly before I make any changes. :)

    Hi Shawna,

Yes – that seems right to me. Fasthosts say that the A record should be changed first and then the CNAME, but both with reference to vemos-consulting.com.

I wish I had a clue what all this A record, CNAME stuff actually meant! haha.

    Many thanks,

    Alex

Hmm. Okay. Well, I’ve added the autodiscover A record to vemos-consulting.com.

However, having an autodiscover CNAME record for the same domain is a conflict, so I’m not able to add both.

Can you please contact Fasthost and tell them we’ve added:

    A autodiscover 213.171.216.58

And have them check if any other changes need to be made to your two domains?

Hi Shawna – OK, let me ask them and I’ll get back to you.

    Hi Shawna,

I have the following message from Fasthosts:

    Dear Alex

Thank you for your support enquiry and I sincerely apologise for the delay of my response.
Please be advised to contact WordPress again and request them to add a Cname Record only. Please see below:

    Host: autodiscover
    Points To: autodiscover.vemos-consulting.com

The reason why I am advising you to add directly this Cname Record alone excluding the A record to point to 213.171.216.58 IP Address, that is because the mailserver of your domain vemos-consulting.com is already pointing to us.

Please then give it within 48-72 to completely propagate.

In the mean time, if you have pending or unresolved issues please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Best regards,

    Fasthosts Customer Support

Does that make sense to you? Is is clear what should be done?

    Thanks again,

    Alex

I think so. I’ve never seen a CNAME record that points to itself, but I’ve set that up for you!

Sorry this has been such a pain. If it still isn’t working in a couple of days, will you contact Fasthosts agin and ask them to verify your DNS records and just let me know what they say?
