dns email management

I’d like to access email through my domain registrar not wordpress. domain is thecountessofhuntingdons.org.uk

I haven’t got it set up correctly. Gandi suggested the following:
“The first option is to go to WordPress and ask them to add the following records to your zone file with them:

    @ 10800 IN MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.
    @ 10800 IN MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.
    imap 10800 IN CNAME access.mail.gandi.net.
    smtp 10800 IN CNAME relay.mail.gandi.net.
    webmail 10800 IN CNAME agent.mail.gandi.net.
    pop 10800 IN CNAME access.mail.gandi.net.

If they do this, your GandiMail will work with your nameservers at WordPress.

The second one, which is the one I recommend, is to transfer your DNS servers back to Gandi’s
servers, and then use A records to point your domain at your site at WordPress. Here is our tutorial
on the type of A records you’d need to do this: http://wiki.gandi.net/en/domains/management/zone/a-
    record

    Thanks

  • You’ll need to add these records to your Custom DNS panel: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/custom-dns/

We can’t support all email configurations, so you may need to use Google Apps for Domains instead: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/google-apps-email/

    Hi I tried to add:

    @ 10800 IN MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.
    @ 10800 IN MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.

And WordPress validation test said no.

  • Try just this:

    MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.
    MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.

Oops. Just seen this now. I tried to go round the other way and have returned all DNS records back to Gandi on their site:

    pop 10800 IN CNAME access.mail.gandi.net.
    blog 10800 IN CNAME blogs.vip.gandi.net.
    webmail 10800 IN CNAME agent.mail.gandi.net.
    smtp 10800 IN CNAME relay.mail.gandi.net.
    imap 10800 IN CNAME access.mail.gandi.net.
    www 10800 IN CNAME webredir.vip.gandi.net.
    @ 10800 IN A 217.70.184.38
    @ 10800 IN MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.
    @ 10800 IN MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.

And trying to follow this to amend the A Record:
    http://wiki.gandi.net/en/domains/management/zone/a-record which states:

You will now need to add your desired A line.

Here is a model that you can follow:

    www 10800 IN A 123.123.123.123
Simply replace “www” with the name of the subdomain you want, and “123.123.123.123” in the above example with the IP address that your provider gives you.

As a reminder “*” means “every subdomain”, so if you have an “*” A record, then there is no need for “www” unless you want to override the ip address you gave with your * entry.

If you want just the domain, then you need the “@” record you see in the above example, or:

    @ 10800 IN A 123.123.123.123
Usually both the * and @ are used.

When you are done, click on the “Submit” button on the bottom of the page to continue.

What info from WordPress would I need?

    Thanks so much for help!

  • Well, if you want your domain mapping to work, your nameservers will need to be pointed here, so I’m afraid that won’t work in this case.

Have you considered trying Google Apps for Domains?

Ok, so have changed back dns on Gandi servers to WordPress.

Have added your suggested lines to WordPress custom dns:
    MX 10 spool.mail.gandi.net.
    MX 50 fb.mail.gandi.net.

Ok, have now gone through the process of setting up Google Apps. Waiting to see if it has worked. Are you able to check on wordpress for me that everything is set up ok here?

    Thanks. Hopefully nearly there.

    Hi there,

Google Apps offers email hosting for custom domain names, but it sounds like you’re interested in using Gandi to host your email. There’s no need to set up both.

If you wish to use Gandi, then the above MX records should work. If you’re having trouble accessing your email after adding those records, you might contact Gandi for further assistance.

As an alternative, you could use Google Apps (and remove the MX records that point to Gandi’s servers):
