DNS Issue when moving blog to wordpress.org on godaddy.com

    Hi all,

I’m moving my wordpress.com blog to wordpress.org (through godaddy.com) but i’m stuck midway because of DNS related issues. I already purchased domain mapping and registration on wordpress.com (it’s valid for another few months) and I understand I have to change the nameservers now, but I’m clueless as to how that should be done, and what values should be inserted.

I followed the ‘domain management’ guidelines (http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/#transfer-to-another-registrar) and got an authorization code – but I don’t know that it’s for. Plus, my domain isn’t recognized in the ‘pending transfers’ category.

I’d highly appreciate it if anyone helped me.

    Thanks.

You can leave your Domain registration at WordPress.com and just change where the nameservers are pointed.

Have you also transferred your content to your Godaddy site (export / import )?

i just got two nameservers from godaddy.com in an email, so now th question is, do i simply replace my wordpress nameservers with the go-daddy ones, or add them ‘alongside’ the wordpress.com nameservers? and i’ve exported the blog. do i import all content before or after i change the nameservers? my skills are pretty basic, so i appreciate all the help i get.

I would import the data into your new blog before changing anything else, or your visitors will see “under construction” “this is just another blog” or whatever – sort of a turn-off.

When new host site is close enough you want visitors to show up, change the nameservers at the Registrar to point to your new site (don’t “add alongside” I have no idea what that would do but it would probably be very bad), you might need to do other things at your new site to make the proper name work but check with your host on that part.

Then over a period of 2 to 72 hours your visitors should all end up at your new site. Don’t forget to set your old WordPress.COM site to private to avoid duplicate content penalty from the search engines.

I’m still a little confused, unfortunately. Godaddy.com has already installed the wordpress software but when I click the admin link, it brings me to this site instead. So i changed the nameservers, but it’ll take time to take effect. I don’t get much traffic in a day so it ought not to make a big difference if the site displays the ‘just another wordpress blog’ message, or something similar.

Thanks for the help. I’ll be heading over to the wordpress.org forum now.

I’m back because the process isn’t running as expected. I followed the guidelines in the support document: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/domain-management/

However, after changing my nameservers and applying for a transfer, my site doesn’t appear in the ‘pending transfers’ category. According to the whois database, the site now has nameservers pointing to godaddy.com, but if I visit Godaddy.com, I am told the site isn’t yet registered under my username.

When I click on the link godaddy.com offered for the new wordpress.org site, I am told the ‘site is parked free’.

Who’s technical team do I contact?
