dns lookup fails

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! I cannot get my site to appear online in view site or view page or by searching, although I can ‘see’ it mocked in preview. The error messages say “webpage unavailable … DNS lookup failed”. I did refresh many times.
I have firefox and chrome browsers that are updated, cache-emptied, cookie-enabled etc as advised in the support notes. I have minimal antivirus settings and no firewall. I have confirmed the confirmation email, and produced pages.
I have mapped a domain name (only) from Netregistry (WP: “you successfully updated the primary domain to sherabinstitute.org”) weeks ago. I do not use the site for blogging, just as a plain ol’ web site.
For the WP address https://sherabinstitutee.wordpress.com (is it possible to fix the spelling?) MS gives the message “cannot locate the internet server or proxy server”, although I can obviously link in to my account. This is ALL gobblygook to me. Dorshul

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi Dorshul,

I checked your domain sherabinstitute.org and it isn’t pointed to WordPress.com right now. That’s why you don’t see your site there. You will need to update your domain’s name servers to point to these:

    • NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    • NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

If you purchased the domain from Netregistry, you’ll need to make that change there. Netregistry has a help page for making that change here:

    http://www.netregistry.com.au/support/modifying-domain-name-servers-or-dns-records/

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

thanks very much, however i did that redirection /mapping weeks ago, and received confirmation; but just now, to be sure, i did it again! i have emailed them to check if problem is still at their end somehow. Could it possibly be something else?
    thanks again, Dorshul.

the problem seems to be with WP name server– the mapping was done exactly as advised by WP (and you) 17 June and is correct and active, according to Netregistry, also when i look at my netregistry console everything looks perfect to me. The DNS messages all say “server cannot be found”, and that is no longer Netregistry.

    Hi Dorshul,

It sounds like there’s a disconnect between what you’re seeing in your Netregistry console and what’s actually set for your domain. I checked your domain and the name servers aren’t set correctly:

    http://leafdns.com/index.cgi?testid=A5CE0C4E

When the name servers are correctly set for the domain, it shows the three WordPress.com name servers there.

Hopefully Netregistry support will be able to sort that out when they reply to the email you sent them. If not, please send them the link above to that DNS test for your domain to help show them the issue.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

you’re so right–unsurprisingly. I had mispelt my own domain name in Netregistry… so, postman got lost. I bought another name (sherabinstitute.net) and all’s good on Chrome, but nothing yet on firefox–I think that it is just a matter of waiting, right. Many thanks, now i can meet the deadline for beginning our classes!

Ah! I’m glad you were able to sort that out and get sherabinstitute.net up and running. (It should start working in all your browsers soon, but if not please let me know and I can investigate that.)

I went ahead and canceled the domain mapping upgrade you bought for sherabinstitute.org and issued a full refund for that. It may take some time for that refund to appear on your bank statement, but you can find the refund receipt now in your Billing History.

I only wish I were closer to Canberra so I could try your classes. :)

Hello again, no more problems with the domain name, thanks, but it is still not being read on many people’s firefox browsers, such as mine, which has no add-ons enabled, a clean cache, low security, recently reinstalled etc. Chrome is ok. Any clues?

    Hi Dorshul,

I opened your site at http://sherabinstitute.net/ in Firefox 39.0 on my computer and it worked for me there. What happens when you try to visit your domain in Firefox? Do you get a specific error message?

  • Unknown's avatar

yes, some firefoxes find it, while some others do not. Mine is also version 39.
There is no error message–google simply fails to find it, and suggests that i may have meant sherabinstitute.com (some Spanish astrologer in trouble for tax, it seems).

    Hi Dorshul,

Just to be sure, are you visiting http://sherabinstitute.net/ and not http://sherabinstitute.org/? The one ending in .net is the one linked to your site here.

If you are having that problem with http://sherabinstitute.net/ you can also try flushing your computer’s DNS cache. That will force your computer to update the information it has saved for your domain.

If you have any questions about that, or if the problem continues, please let me know.
