DNS needs to be updated?

  • Unknown's avatar

I purchased a WP bundle with a new domain (registered through WP) to be linked to my blog. It says that ‘DNS needs to be updated’ by changing the ‘name servers’ however, I don’t know how to do that. I am also a complete noob to this site. A little help? I just need my domain to reflect .com rather than wordpress… TIA

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

DNS/nameservers pretty much just need to know where the blog is and then tell the rest of the web.

There is a good instructional topic here that explains what to do when you want the blog to not just be site.wordpress.com.

hi there, thanks for your reply.

I just read that info however, it’s more instructional about how to map an existing domain. I don’t have an existing domain, I signed up with WP and ‘bought’ one through them.

They state that the wordpress.com address will direct to the .com address however, it’s been well over 24 hours and the .com address doesn’t exist.

    Thanks anyway.

For starters we need the name of the domain you think you bought before anyone can give you accurate help

    sure thing!

    It’s laraadele.com

    WP is laraadele.wordpress.com

What does it say on your dashboard Domains page?

I’ve taken a screenshot which can be foundhere.

Domain helper and a whois shows the domain name is not registered.

Did you do both, Map the domain name and Buy / register the domain name?

I have also flagged this for the staff to review your account to make sure you are not charged twice. you can try purchasing the domain name again, worst that happens is you are charged twice and the staff needs to refund the extra charge .

I followed the instructions here except I wasn’t prompted to pay. It said it was included in my premium bundle and wouldn’t cost anything. Also, on this page, it says Premium gets a free credit towards registering a domain which is consistent with the process I did to “register” the domain. So I cannot figure out what went wrong in the process.

The register is not automatic, you need to start at the Register a domain part, when you get to the pay part there should be some sort of credit so the registration will not cost you extra.

The domain registration & mapping need to each be done, the bundle saves you money but you still need to do each operation by itself

Wait, I think I’ve figured this out. auxclass, do you remember when staff suspended buying domains over the weekends, because there were so many problems and staff were not around? Do you think maybe they did it again, only they didn’t tell us this time?

  • Unknown's avatar

@RC – maybe vaguely but not for sure

But from reading the OP comments it sounds like they just did the mapping, my memory is that it is a two step process and sounds like the instructions when you just buy the bundle and they walk you through the steps could use some fine tuning

@auxclass When following instructions to register a domain (w/ WP) I was not prompted to make any purchases and it said this would be free of charge because it’s included in ‘my premium bundle’ – is this the credit you are talking about? Is that how it appears?

  • Unknown's avatar

is this the credit you are talking about? Is that how it appears?

As my memory of what the staff has said yes that is the credit – they do have it set up so you should not be charged twice.

Part of the reason for the two step process is that not everyone that buys a bundle needs to register a domain name – they come here with an existing domain name (as I did ) so if I bought a bundle and it tried to register my domain name again things would blow up – so they need to make it a two step process.

I tried to re-register the domain and it said ‘This domain has already been mapped to a WordPress.com blog’.

I then went into Manage Domain Subscriptions and clicked the Cancel button as seen here however, the following text appears:

‘Domains registered on WordPress.com cannot be deleted here. You must contact Support and request deletion’.

    Thanks for your advice though.

So it appears that the site thinks the domain is registered with wordpress.com however, as mentioned earlier the domain is still not registered.

  • Hello all.

I am seeing laraadele.com as being both registered and mapped and pointing to http://laraadele.wordpress.com/. A little testing shows laraadele.com sending me correctly to your WordPress.com site.

  • Auxclass/Raincoaster,

As far as I know, there was nothing suspending domain purchasing this past weekend.
