DNS needs to be updated?

  • Unknown's avatar

I bought my domain “rockabillyruby.co.uk” from 123connect 3 years ago and mapped it to wordpress.com at which point the DNS servers were all changed and i have had no trouble with the domain since. I now have a DNS needs to be updated on my Upgrades page and my domain can no longer be found?

No idea how or who needs to do this?

Can WordPress do this for me or the original host?

    Thanks!

    Hi there!

I answered your other post on the forums as well, but regarding changes to your DNS, if you plan to point rockabillyruby.co.uk to your WordPress.com site, the nameservers need to be changed with your domain registrar.

    Here are the instructions:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/#instructions-for-mapping-an-existing-domain

Of course, as I mentioned in my earlier note, you don’t seem to have rockabillyruby.co.uk registered any longer, and would need to re-purchase it before mapping it.

    Thanks!

    Hello,

Thanks so much for your help!

I have contacted the registrar and the domain had in fact expired, I have now purchased a .com domain via WordPress which is the original domain I wanted but still want to purchase .co.uk and have this traffic redirected.

Once I have re purchased the .co.uk do I have to map this again even though it is still currently listed on WordPress as active and expiring next year?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello there!

I am so glad you were able to get that domain back! Terrific news :)

Once you change your name servers with your .co.uk domain registrar, you shouldn’t need to adjust anything here at WordPress.com since you already have mapping to that domain. However, when you do change those name servers, it can take up to 72-hours for the adjustments to take place internet-wide. Just so you’re aware!

If there is any trouble at all with the mapping, please do let me know. If we need to, we can simply disconnect your mapping, and reconnect it.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

    Hello!

So, I have purchased a .com via WordPress (which I initially wanted!) and have re purchased the .co.uk so I own both- once the registrar has updated the servers and I have chosen the .com domain as my primary, will all previous posts be redirected automatically?

At the moment none of my previous posts I find online are being redirected to rockabillyruby.com ? Maybe this takes up to 72 hours too?

Sorry if I’m asking really simple questions not entirely sure what I’m doing here!

Thanks so much yu have been so helpful :)

Hi again! Seems like you’re making lots of headway today. That’s terrific :)

once the registrar has updated the servers and I have chosen the .com domain as my primary, will all previous posts be redirected automatically?

Because your WordPress.com site (rockabillyruby.wordpress.com) contains all your previous content, no matter what your custom domain is, all your posts/pages/media will display there.

Here’s a little breakdown about the difference between your WordPress.com site and your custom domain name, if you’re interested. It might shed some light on what’s going on with your domain:

At the moment none of my previous posts I find online are being redirected to rockabillyruby.com ? Maybe this takes up to 72 hours too?

I am seeing all the posts you created at rockabillyruby.wordpress.com when I visit rockabillyruby.com. If you’re not seeing that, you may need to clear your browser’s cache. In order to do that, here are some helpful hints:

    Solve Common Browser Issues

After you clear Chrome’s cache, take another look at your site and see if there are any changes.

The only item that could take the full 72-hours to appear properly is your .co.uk domain.

I hope this helps! Drop me a line if you have other questions or concerns. All the best to you!

    Hello,

Thanks so much for explaining all the above. The registrar has updates the DNS servers now and all posts are redirecting to .com.

Again sorry if this is a silly question but when trying to search for rockabillyruby.com on google it says “did you mean rockabillyruby.co.uk” my previous site domain. I was under the impression that due to the mapping already being in place my site would be searchable by its primary domain now? I haven’t written any content on the site for a while so this may be why?

    Thank you!

    Hi there!

    Fabulous. See, you’re a pro :)

This is going to be a bit of a waiting game, I’m afraid. Google can take 4-6 weeks to index new domains and changes to websites. Blogging regularly will help A LOT. Since every time you post something new, it gets sent to the search engines.

You can try to expedite the situation by using Google’s Webmaster Tools:

    That should help!

Any other concerns or questions? Just drop me a line! Thanks.
