DNS Problem

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I’ve read your instructions for setting a rediret for a registered domain name to the wp servers. For the last couple of weeks I’ve tried various permutations of settings but to no avail. I have a screenshot of my admin console but there’s no way for me to attach it to the post, I’ll try and explain here

My registered domain is searchat.co.uk and my wp blog is searchat.wp.com

    DNS Admin
My ‘A’ root record is set to 72.232.101.25 (has to be an IP)
I have an ftp cname set to ns1.wp.com
I have an imap cname set to ns2.wp.com
I have an www cname set to ns3.wp.com

Do I have to delete all cname references?
Do I have to set up multiple ‘A’ references to the ns1,ns2,ns3 servers?

    Thanks
    Jan

You need to be asking at WordPress.org, not here, as covered in the sticky thread at the top of the forums called Read Me First. We have different parameters here.

I read that, I thought that wp.org was for self-hosted wp installations? I’m not doing that I just want to redirect searchat.co.uk to my blog at searchat.wordpress.com? Where is the reference to your parameters, is it this?

    Domain Mapping

Because that is exactly the reference I am using for this dns redirection.

I think you should email staff for help support@wordpress.com

As I read this the OP is trying to config a dns switch to WordPress dot com . But there are references to admin. Domain names need to be switched from wherever with the hosts / registrars concerned.

Thank goodness – a geek has arrived to help. ;)

I gave the “WP.org vs WP.com” answer because you didn’t give use the URL of your blog and your username is linked to an irrelevant, non-WP.com site. Save time in the future by linking your WP.com username to your WP.com blog, please.

Firstly, I think if you refer to line 5 of my original request again you’ll see the address of my wp blog in this sentence

‘My registered domain is searchat.co.uk and my wp blog is searchat.wp.com’

Secondly, there’s no indication that somehow making reference to another website (my main domain) in my profile in the box entitled ‘my website’ would result in confusion for support. Why not call it ‘my WP blog’ and save a lot of grief?

However, I have done as timethief recommended, thanks for the link TT, so I guess we’re sorted.

In order to get closer to an answer, I’ll try and elaborate on my original explanation

The objective I’m trying to acheive is that when someone types ‘searchat.co.uk’ into their browser they arrive at my wp blog ‘searchat.wordpress.com’

My registrar and hosting service for the domain name searchat.co.uk is a third party http://www.cheapdomainnames.co.uk

They provide a DNS Admin (hence original ref to ‘DNS admin’) console which I am using to modify the DNS settings in accordance with the instructions in your FAQ.

    Domain Mapping

    i.e.
Using the DNS tools provided by your domain registrar, remove any existing nameservers and add the following:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

However, in my DNS Admin console I am asked to choose the DNS record type.

The first DNS entry for searchat.co.uk is set to an ‘A’ (IPV4) type record and demands an IP address which I have set to 72.232.101.25 (a.k.a ns1.worpress.com)

I cannot create multiple hostnames for searchat.co.uk, so the FAQ advice to key ns1, ns2, ns3.wp.com in place of existing hostnames is puzzling.

Therefore the second entry for ‘www.searchat.co.uk’ is set to a CNAME type record and demands a hostname which I have set to ns2.worpress.com

I have now deleted all other references to any kind of subdomain and hostname for searchat.co.uk

Creating multiple ‘A’ type records (i’ve tried this) and referring them to ns1, ns2, ns3 etc confuses DNSSTUFF completely.

I cannot create a duplicate cname type record for searchat.co.uk or http://www.searchat.co.uk and associate it with ns3.worpress.com, so there is no reference to ns3.wp.com

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks

remove any existing *nameservers* and add the following:...
means you need to change NS type records.

  • Unknown's avatar

There are three types of record available to me
    A, CNAME and TXT?

  • Unknown's avatar

then the only available option for you is to map a “subdomain” of .searchat.co.uk domain (ex blog.searchat.co.uk). see FAQ entry.
Note: You cannot map only the “www” subdomain since we remove the www from all the URLs at wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I haven’t just mapped the www domain. Let’s assume I remove that anyway, I have mapped the searchat.co.uk domain to the ns1 IP address, why doesn’t that work? That is actually the one I keep keying into my ‘wp options, domain, add a domain entry’ and get this message

‘We were unable to verify that searchat.co.uk is pointing to WordPress.com………’

    > I have mapped the searchat.co.uk domain to the ns1 IP address, why doesn’t that work?

because you have not and don’t this way:

    > set type=NS
    > searchat.co.uk

    Non-authoritative answer:
    searchat.co.uk nameserver = ns1.phase8.net
    searchat.co.uk nameserver = ns2.phase8.net
    searchat.co.uk nameserver = ns0.phase8.net

just because you can’t — your DNS control panel doesn’t allow you to do that. read on my prev. post again.

a FAQ note above should be read/worded as:
You cannot map namely/in particular the “www” subdomain since we remove the www from all the URLs at wordpress.com
