DNS record truncated after transfer from google/squarespace to wordpress
-
I transferred 2 domains from google/squarespace to wordpress yesterday, 5-oct-2023. On inspection of the DNS records there were some differences that may or may not be important.
This post is about the domain name musicbeat.com. I’ll make a separate post about musicbeat.org, which is associated with a google workspace starter environment.
The only apparent problem with the transfer of DNS records for musicbeat.com is this record:
In google’s DNS:
google._domainkey.musicbeat.com. 3600 IN TXT “v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=MIIBIjANBgkqhkiG9w0BAQEFAAOCAQ8AMIIBCgKCAQEA1ugYRoObV3gE6JlXa+v62GjMTL1Giu3i4j6quq10d/fIbOBY+ATBBcNd/Pm91GwtcStGV/avjQ0E6BXIMsaV0aZsHCZSoLv4t0QcggCLUUxyWjJKfyH1AHcUnqnWrfTbztWr8XYVL+7KNKhfynd64Z8P+Z58UOgcgS7gVy4vQWA6a1iHNFXt8eL0UsnljPbHO” “KJjcpaiuAKXc5Po1raKtCwFXs4FaZ6W6cXU8DnsJelTlAFaGgJW4TCHf40u1pqdo3sGnhBQVAcZRr0TzE0toBr8nLng0orGvsH2R2VF+RjL7q/GCqh2+wIEyABQWP4OwhYAOe3TNNO6vDi+QMUnewIDAQAB”
The value consists of two strings enclosed in double quotes. The value in wordpress DNS omits the second of these strings.
I am nowhere near an expert on the purpose of this TXT record, and so far I haven’t noticed any misbehavior in the way requests that refer to musicbeat.com.
But perhaps your experts and developers would benefit from correcting the transfer mechanism so that multi-value DNS TXT records are completely transferred.
Thanks for your time and attention.

Hi there,
TXT records on WordPress.com have a limit of 255 characters, so it can be the case that some longer records such as this one may not migrate correctly and the result will be truncated.
Are you able to contact Google Workspace support and ask for a domainkey record that is less than 255 characters? If so this one can be deleted and replaced with a working record.
Thanks!
