DNS redirection to WordPress from unused domain
-
How do I point my old unused domain name to my new WordPress website? The unused domain name is administered by another party who is happy to update their DNS details to point to WordPress but where do I find those details?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

It already seems like your custom domain is pointing towards your WordPress.com site:

Thanks for that info, I passed these WordPress name server details to the administrator of the disused domain name (visitbarringtontops.com.au)
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
They initially said that it didn’t work because of the upper case letters so they changed it to lower case letters. But it’s still not pointing to the new WordPress site.
Do I need to map the disused domain name (visitbarringtontops.com.au) to my new site as well? -
I have visited visitbarringtontops.info and viewed several of its pages, and it appears to be functioning correctly:
The issue you encountered was most likely due to either your browser’s cache, or DNS not yet being up-to-date.
Can you please try clearing out your cache and cookies?
If you are still having a problem, let me know, and we can take the next troubleshooting step, once I get more feedback.

The problem isn’t with the WordPress site, that is working OK when the URL visitbarringtontops.info is used. The problem is with the URL visitbarringtontops.com.au which is owned and administered by a separate entity and I use it with their permission. The administrator for that particular domain has amended the DNS details to point it to the WordPress site using these server details:
ns1.wordpress.com
ns2.wordpress.com
ns3.wordpress.com
But the redirect does not seem to be working, so I was wondering if I’d missed something or entered something incorrect. Should the correct DNS details for the three name servers actually be: ns1.visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com
ns2.visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com
ns3.visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com -
While the name servers for this domain are pointing towards WordPress.com, the domain still needs to be mapped to a WordPress.com site.
You can do that here:
https://visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
Let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks, I’ve just tried to pay for the mapping but it won’t proceed, and I got the following error message:
DNS CNAME for visitbarringtontops.com.au needs to point to visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com
So do I need to tell the administrator to change the name server details to be:
ns1.visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com
ns2.visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com
ns3.visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com -
The name servers for visitbarringtontops.com.au appear to be fine.
As I previously stated, you still need to add a Domain Mapping Upgrade for visitbarringtontops.com.au to visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com, which you can do here:
https://visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
If you have any more questions, please let us know.

Thanks, I’ve been trying to get to the bottom of this problem with the other domain’s administrator. Can you kindly provide me with your email address so I can forward you a screen shot of what the other administrator has set up with the DNS records? (As I can’t paste it into this forum discussion trail and I’d like you to see if it is incorrect.)
If you like, you can send a quick message to my work email:

Thanks, Thomas -
Looks like my email address has been redacted from my post just now. It is: thomas dot davey at gloucester dot nsw dot gov dot au

If you’d like to share a screenshot, you can always add it to your site’s Media Library, and I will be able to access it. However, in this case, I do not think that is necessary.
Your domain’s name servers are already pointed towards WordPress.com. As previously stated, all you need to do is add the Domain Mapping Upgrade for visitbarringtontops.com.au to your site here:
https://visitbarringtontops.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
Afterwards, clear your browser’s cache:
Within 24-48 hours, the change should become effective.
If you have additional questions, let me know.

OK thanks, I’ve just uploaded the screen shot of the DNS records into the media library. Could you kindly advise if the other site’s technician has used the correct details for the redirect to the WordPress site?
-
Everything looks good:

Thanks for all your help, I finally got the mapping to work (just by upgrading from the free plan) and now the redirect also works, so now the unused domain name correctly points to my new WordPress site. So I can now get going on adding new posts. :-) Many thanks, Thomas.

I’m glad that everything is working well.
If you have any other questions regarding WordPress.com, please let us know :-)
