DNS requires update
-
I purchased the domain willowcottagetheatre.org through WordPress, and let WordPress handle the domain mapping. It’s worked fine until now.
This morning, the site is unavailable at willowcottagetheatre. I’m shown a page saying that the domain has expired, despite the fact that it actually expires some time next year.
On the ‘My Upgrades’ page, this domain has ‘DNS needs to be updated.‘ Clicking that takes me to the DNS settings tab on the ‘My Domains’ page – it looks to me like it should all work, because it says ‘handled by WordPress.’
So, what gives? Any idea why this has stopped working all of a sudden? Is it just a matter of waiting until the DNS updates itself?

Hi there. I think you registered that domain with a WordPress.ORG site, not WordPress.com. The two are completely separate and different. http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
The WhoIs data for your domain shows you’re hosted by eNom Incorporated, not WordPress.com, so you’ll need to contact them to sort this out. You can also post in the WordPress.org forum for help.
If you had bought it for a WordPress.com site, please provide the free WordPress.com URL for that site (i.e. http://yoursitename.wordpress.com/)

Hey kokkieh, thanks for getting back to me. I can assure you, I’ve done everything via wordpress.com! They host it, I chose a theme and customised it, etc.
The original URL would have been http://willowcottagetheatre.wordpress.com, but that redirects to http://willowcottagetheatre.org.

That’s strange, as your domain’s WhoIs information shows it is definitely not hosted by WordPress.com. I’ll tag this for staff to follow up. Please subscribe to the thread so you are notified when they respond and be patient while waiting, keeping in mind that it is a long weekend for many people so it might take longer than usual for them to respond.

Thanks kokkieh, I appreciate it. I’m already subscribed to this, but I’ll just keep refreshing the page anyway… fingers crossed!
-
No need to keep refreshing – I doubt you’ll get a response within the next couple of hours as it’s still very early in the morning in the US and many of the staff members might not be working today. If you’re subscribed you’ll get an email when staff responds. Best to wait for that.

It’s beginning to look like we only purchased domain mapping through wordpress.com, and the domain was still held with the previous company…
If that’s the case, I’m already in the process of requesting the domain to a registrar I know better and will renew it there if it is really expired.
-
In that case, make sure the registrar changes your name servers to wordpress.com, as explained here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
I’m leaving this thread tagged for staff so they can confirm whether you have mapping or not, and for if you need help with anything else.
-
It looks like your domain is not pointing to WordPress.com name servers yet:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-helper/?host=willowcottagetheatre.org
Please go to your domain registrar’s site and log into the control panel. You will need to update the name servers as below:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
For more information, please visit the help documentation provided by the registrar and our support page:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/
If I’ve misunderstood the issue, or if you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hi @pmciano
Thanks for your reply, and thanks also to @kokkieh for all his help that weekend!
The organisation originally holding the domain didn’t renew it for us, and I have since been struggling to wrestle it away to another registrar that I trust more. Once that’s finished, I’ll renew and point the DNS to the right place. I should have this resolved soon!
Thanks again :)
