dns settings

I have a domain I purchased through WordPress.com. I’m currently trying to get this domain to point to the hosting that I purchased through GoDaddy, yet GD is telling me to update the A record for the domain to make it point to GD hosting. I have tried to do that with the A @ 50.62.249.1 setting, and it will not let me use the @ symbol.

Can someone tell me what I’m doing wrong? About to pull my hair out.

  • Hi,

WordPress.com’s DNS management tool doesn’t allow setting a A record for the root domain (@).

What’ll you need to do is to use GoDaddy’s DNS tool to set your DNS as you’ll like (copying over MX records for e-mail, etc), then change the name servers for your domain registered with WordPress.com to GoDaddy’s.

More details and step-by-step instructions: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

I have seen all the step by step instructions related to this and none of them are helping. I have moved forward in just transfering the domain name, and now I’m being asked or an authorization code. In the instructions, it shows this being retrieved from GoDaddy, however, without being able to have this transfered, I can’t get the code to do the transfer.

  • I can appreciate your frustration and thanks for your patience with me (a lowly volunteer!)

This page details the instructions for getting the authorization code. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration

You’ll need your customer number and set a password from your Dashboard (Store->Domains->Domain Administration->Transfer ownership to another registrar), then return to that page to access the domain manager.

The domain manager will allow you to unlock your domain and request the authorization code to be sent to you via email.

I could be wrong, but I think WordPress.com’s domain system is built upon the same software as GoDaddy’s. The screenshots look like GoDaddy, but isn’t.

    Cheers!

Yep! I followed those steps and figured it out. Part of what was throwing me off was the similarity in the screenshots. I was convinced I needed to be doing those steps through GoDaddy.

Thanks for helping! You certainly saved me lots of pain and suffering (plus wait time on the phone with GoDaddy)!
