do I have a spammer?

I got a comment form this person
    http://www.mykidsplanet.org/
    on this page of mine
    http://vintagefan.wordpress.com/?attachment_id=19#comment-4896
which I didn’t even know existed as a page, it’s just one of the files I uploaded, I got my profile pic form it. I did a search for it on my blog and I did’t get so I’m wondering how this person found it. Plus it was your typical spammer ‘informative page I’m going to bookmark you’ type of comment though there is nothing remotely informative about it, no text at all (I deleted the comment, saved the url cz I was a little creeped out) Then I checked out their site and it looked legitimate but the text looked copy-pasted. So am I imagining things and this person isn’t a spammer?

go with your first instinct and don’t worry about deleting the comment. I assume Akismet caught it as spam before you deleted it? If not, make sure you mark stuff as spam before deleting it in the future :)

Akismet didn’t catch it, and I’m ashamed to say I approved it because of the first glance at the url and the comment wasn’t all that spammy, after which I got a bit suspicious at the odd page they chose to comment on and then did some digging.

So I guess I’ll let it rest and not worry :)

vintagefan: it is spam. i saw that same “person” in two other blogs tracked through the ‘my comments’ feature in dashboard.

Creepy spammer. I guess the WordPress folks can handle it now. Thank you Sulz and Judyb.

    you’re welcome :)

It’s powered by WordPress (that’s what it says). Should I be a good blog citizen and let them know of my suspicions? Or will they pick up on this themselves?

it’s powered by wordpress, but it’s not hosted here. They are using the wordpress software available from wordpress.org on their own web host. The staff here has no power over it.

Okay Judyb (I feel a little short of gray cells suddenly). Thanks again :)

    Hi all

I am getting a lot of emails in the email account attached to my WordPress.com blog that say that someone (or more likely something) is leaving comments in my blog’s landing page comment form. Needless to say they’re almost all spam. I’m not complaining that they’re showing up on my blog without my approval for the public to read (they’re not of course…thanks WP.com!), it’s just that there’s 2 types you should be aware of that seem to show up.

    1) random strings of letters as commentor names (these I know to delete the notification emails for and have paid zero attention to their contents or where they’re coming from)

    2) names that at first look like a real person’s name but don’t have a space between the first and last name i.e. ‘GeorgePopper’ or NatalyaKrevchenko’…these are all apparently coming from people who purportedly use mail.ru emails and they either promote erectile dysfunction drugs or porn sites.

It’s not all that annoying, but it means deleting 4-10 emails a day for me.

Just writing to let you all know…be careful out there.
