Do I have my domain set up correctly?
-
Couple of weeks of failed work to create a new, single page wordpress.com site to replace my antique squarespace business site. I have had so much trouble with domain transfer that I now have no idea whether it has worked and I’m just waiting for the internet to serve it up, or whether I still have things set up incorrectly. The intended domain is robertsandkay.com. I am on a personal $48/year plan. Originally, the site address was robertsandkay0.wordpress.com. It is now showing in Admin as robertsandkay.com. I think that’s good news. But ‘visit site’ (as well as entering robertsandkay.com in an incognito search bar) still lead to a several-days-old message saying the domain is still mapped to Squarespace (I don’t think so — WhoIs shows it at automattic) though I have canceled the Squarespace subscription. Is there any way to know that what’s happening now is simply a waiting period for propagation?
All guidance appreciated.WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No

Hey there! It looks like we somehow got your old A Records in place, perhaps when we tried to copy over your other DNS settings for you.
I’ve set them to WordPress.com’s DNS for you, so that should take effect within the next few hours. If you don’t see the correct site after a few hours, this may help hurry the propagation along:
Occasionally, a site might not be accessible to you, but others can access it. For example, this could happen if you recently made DNS changes to your domain, connected a domain, or let your domain expire momentarily. If clearing your browser’s cache doesn’t help, you can try clearing your computer’s DNS cache. What is a DNS Cache? The DNS cache is used by all operating systems to -
I am thrilled to see a response. I haven’t traced it out yet and built a new site – I gave up and disconnected the domain name from any site two days go. What you have done may help as I start again. Thank you.

Supernovia and other staff friends,
I’m back quickly because I have concluded that I must start from scratch and set up a new site, on a paid plan, using a domain I own and have transferred to WordPress.com after trying other approaches. The domain is robertsandkay.com
When I try to begin a new site, however, I cannot get past the domain panel, where I am told that my domain is already mapped to a wordpress.com site. I disconnected the site completely (I thought) yesterday morning, so about 30 hours ago.
Please help me can launch a new site, using my own custom domain, robertsandkay.com, which is now living at WordPress.
I would appreciate it so. In building and managing several sites on several platforms, starting in 1998, this is the most frustrating experience I have ever had. And I truly don’t know why.
Thank you for all help.

I meant to say that I have cleared my browser cache and cookies, turned machine off and on many times, tried different browsers. All the straightforward things I know to do.

Hi there,
I can see that robertsandkay.com is still listed as being under your account here, which is why it is showing as unavailable for use on a new site: https://wordpress.com/domains/manage
I also see that you have a nicely set up site at https://robertsandkay.wordpress.com/ currently. Are you trying to change the address of that site to be robertsandkay.com instead?
From what I can see you may have added your domain elsewhere instead, and staff is able to help sort that out for you. Thanks for confirming!

Oops, forgot to mention I see that you have a very similar looking site at https://robertsandkay0.wordpress.com/
Can you clarify which site you want to have shown at the custom address?
Thanks!

It is so fantastic to have your help! I would be delighted if you would make robertsandkay0.wordpress.com turn into robertsandkay.com. I believe I would need to create a new paid personal plan in order for that to happen. I’m right here, ready to do that. I have subscribed and canceled the plan twice when I couldn’t get things to work and thought I had to start from absolute scratch again.
If you give me a nod I can set that plan back in motion in seconds. And if you did the rest of the magic, wonderful.
For now, I want only one page of the site to be accessible to viewers after launch. That’s the home page, or Roberts & Kay. If I need to do something about the other automatically created pages (or posts) to keep them from being indexed or whatever, please advise.
I am beyond excited that this is happening. Thank you.

I don’t think this will matter, but before I replied to you a couple of minutes ago I did make one small change to robertsandkay0.wordpress.com, the site I am suggesting I’d like to make THE robertsandkay.com site. I renamed it, back to Roberts & Kay. I had changed the site title to Zero Roberts and Kay, so I could more easily keep track of the attempts I was making on it, contrasted with its sister effort, the other robertsandkay.wordpress.com site.

Hey there,
Many thanks for that clarification there!
It is so fantastic to have your help! I would be delighted if you would make robertsandkay0.wordpress.com turn into robertsandkay.com.
No problem – I’ve moved the domain robertsandkay.com to robertsandkay0.wordpress.com.
I believe I would need to create a new paid personal plan in order for that to happen. I’m right here, ready to do that.
That’s correct, and this can be done here: https://wordpress.com/plans/robertsandkay0.wordpress.com
Once the purchase is made, the domain robertsandkay.com can be set as the primary domain for the site via Upgrades > Domains > click on robertsandkay.com > click Make primacy.
Consider this to be the nod to make that purchase! :)
For now, I want only one page of the site to be accessible to viewers after launch. That’s the home page, or Roberts & Kay. If I need to do something about the other automatically created pages (or posts) to keep them from being indexed or whatever, please advise.
The site is currently set to private, so there’s no further action with stopping the site from being indexed.
I hope this helps!

Hi, all – I am thrilled to have just
(1) restarted a personal plan so that the robertsandkay.com custom domain can be applied to robertsandkay0.wordpress.com
(2) Connected robertsandkay.com to robertsandkay0.wordpress.com and
(3) made robertsandkay.com the primary domain.
I have made my site public, and I have made “blog” and “about” private as I don’t want to use them right now but might want to later.
I think it’s working, and I’m over the moon. I had no idea how happy I would be to see this tiny site behave as I wanted it to.
Thank you for making things work.

Perfect! I can confirm I see the site at the custom address and it’s looking great!

Thanks for rocking WordPress.com! :)
