sorry, a follow up question as well. when I try to list my blog on some sites they ask me to include a icon linking to their site. How do I do this?

No, you don’t need an upgrade.

and this should help with the second:

1. I don’t think you can do it with CSS: with CSS you can only modify the appearance of a theme. But I may be wrong.
2. In just about any other theme, you could have a random-post link as a page tab in the header or in various ways in the sidebar. Banners linking to other sites are also meant for the sidebar. But Monotone is very restricted: no header tabs other than the two built-in ones, and no sidebar.
3. So, if you stick to this theme, the only thing you could do is set up an introductory static front page (see the FAQ on that). Probably insert a nice pic in it to make it appealing, also deactivate comments and pings. You’ll need to create and set a posts page too (see same FAQ). Then in the static front page you can add a link to the posts page, as well as the random-post link you want (see raincoaster’s first link) and the banners.
